TSMC is gearing up to embark on mass production at its Arizona facility by the second half of 2025, offering 4nm semiconductor technology to big names in the tech industry such as Apple, NVIDIA, AMD, and Qualcomm. This initiative marks a significant step in TSMC’s expansion into the United States, as it leverages the benefits of the CHIPS Act to enhance domestic chip manufacturing capabilities.
Already a major player in Taiwan, TSMC’s journey to establishing one of the most extensive chip production facilities abroad is underway, with the Arizona site central to its US strategy. However, there’s a catch. The cost of production at this new location is anticipated to be significantly higher—about 30% more than in Taiwan. This price increase comes as a result of challenges like a shortage of materials required to stabilize yield rates and an underdeveloped semiconductor supply chain in the US.
Initially, the Arizona plant will have a production capacity of 20,000 wafers per month, focusing on 4nm chip fabrication. This is just Phase 1 of TSMC’s broader plans, with ambitions to dive into mass production of 2nm chips by 2028—although this future phase remains somewhat uncertain due to ongoing “technology transfer” issues between the US and Taiwan.
Despite the promising prospects of having a US-based production line, tech companies sourcing from this new facility could face higher costs, a factor that might eventually translate into increased prices for consumer products. The presence of TSMC in the US is set to significantly influence the direction of the country’s semiconductor industry. This development unfolds against a backdrop of evolving regulatory dynamics, particularly under the framework provided by the current US administration, which has had its reservations about the operations of foreign firms like TSMC within American borders.
