TSMC and ASE Begin Construction on Taiwan’s First Advanced Packaging Supply Chain Hub
Taiwan is taking a major step forward in the global semiconductor race as construction begins at Baipu Industrial Park in Kaohsiung on what is being described as the country’s first advanced packaging supply chain cluster. The project comes at a critical time, as demand for artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and next-generation chips continues to surge worldwide.
The new development is expected to strengthen Taiwan’s role as a key center for advanced semiconductor manufacturing. As AI chips become more powerful and complex, traditional chipmaking alone is no longer enough. Advanced packaging has become essential because it allows multiple chip components to work together more efficiently, improving performance, reducing power consumption, and enabling more compact designs.
TSMC and ASE are at the center of this major expansion. Their involvement highlights how important advanced packaging has become for the future of the chip industry. While Taiwan is already known as a global leader in semiconductor production, this new facility aims to build a more complete and resilient local supply chain for cutting-edge packaging technologies.
The Baipu Industrial Park project is expected to support growing demand from AI servers, data centers, cloud computing platforms, and HPC applications. These sectors require chips that can handle massive amounts of data at high speeds while maintaining energy efficiency. Advanced packaging technologies are increasingly viewed as the key to meeting those needs.
Kaohsiung is also set to benefit from the investment. The construction of the advanced packaging hub is expected to create new job opportunities, attract related suppliers, and support the region’s transformation into a stronger technology and manufacturing base. As more semiconductor companies expand beyond northern Taiwan, southern Taiwan is becoming increasingly important to the island’s long-term industrial strategy.
The timing of the project is significant. Global demand for AI processors and accelerated computing hardware has placed pressure on the semiconductor supply chain. Companies across the tech industry are racing to secure access to advanced manufacturing and packaging capacity. By developing a dedicated packaging supply chain cluster, Taiwan is positioning itself to meet rising global demand more effectively.
Advanced packaging is no longer a secondary part of chip production. It is now one of the most important areas of innovation in the semiconductor industry. Technologies such as chiplet integration, 2.5D packaging, 3D stacking, and high-bandwidth memory integration are helping chipmakers deliver higher performance without relying only on smaller transistor sizes.
The new Kaohsiung site could play an important role in supporting these next-generation technologies. As AI models grow larger and computing workloads become more demanding, the need for advanced chip packaging will only increase. This makes the Baipu Industrial Park development a strategic move not only for Taiwan, but also for the global technology supply chain.
With construction now underway, Taiwan is reinforcing its position as a global semiconductor powerhouse. The project represents more than just a new manufacturing site; it signals the next phase of the chip industry, where packaging, integration, and supply chain strength are becoming just as important as wafer fabrication itself.
As artificial intelligence and high-performance computing continue to reshape the technology landscape, Taiwan’s first advanced packaging supply chain hub could become a key foundation for the next generation of powerful, efficient, and highly integrated chips.
