Toyota’s Kolín factory has kicked off production of the Aygo X Hybrid, signaling more than just a new model rollout—it marks a pivotal step in a sweeping transformation of the TMMCZ site toward electrification. The plant, which employs around 3,200 people and also builds the Yaris, has been evolving into a major logistics hub since 2024. Now it is gearing up for the next phase: full-scale electric vehicle manufacturing.
Toyota confirmed a €680 million investment in the Czech facility to enable production of an all-new battery electric vehicle and its associated battery systems starting in 2026. To support this shift, the Kolín complex is expanding from 152,000 to over 173,000 square meters. The upgrade includes a modern paint shop and a new welding shop designed to meet future production standards for both hybrids and BEVs. The Czech government is backing the investment with up to €64 million, underlining the site’s strategic importance to the region’s automotive industry and to Europe’s broader push into e-mobility.
Leadership at TMMCZ describes the approach as a dual-track strategy: build momentum with the Aygo X Hybrid today while preparing the line and workforce for dedicated electric models tomorrow. The Aygo X lineup itself is growing, with the introduction of the GR Sport variant adding a sportier chapter to the city car’s story. Together, these moves position Kolín as a flexible production hub capable of meeting diverse market demands—from efficient hybrid city runabouts to next-generation electric vehicles.
For Toyota, the timing aligns with rising consumer interest in low-emission city cars and the accelerating rollout of EV infrastructure across Europe. For the Czech plant, it means job stability, new skills, and cutting-edge manufacturing capabilities that future-proof the operation. And for buyers, it points to a broader range of electrified options—starting with the Aygo X Hybrid—delivered from a facility built to handle the next wave of automotive technology.
With construction underway and a firm 2026 target for BEV production, Kolín is set to become a cornerstone in Toyota’s European electrification roadmap. The start of Aygo X Hybrid production is just the opening move in a larger strategy that blends immediate efficiency gains with long-term electric ambitions.
