Gamers and fans of rhythm games, the wait is over! Developer Unknown X has revealed that the rhythm game spinoff set in the Touhou universe, Touhou Danmaku Kagura: Phantasia Lost, is slated for a release on the Nintendo Switch platform. The exciting title will make its handheld debut on September 5th, complete with exclusive new features such as a mode that incorporates the Switch’s touchscreen capabilities.
Initially released for Windows PC via Steam on February 8th, Touhou Danmaku Kagura: Phantasia Lost offers a standalone experience that builds upon the beloved Touhou Project’s smartphone rhythm game. Players are invited to immerse themselves in Danmaku Kagura, where they can collect Mitama Cards and Memory Fragments to unlock the mysteries and reconstruct the once vibrant world of Phantasia.
The game offers two distinct rhythm gameplay experiences. In Kagura Stage, players highlight their timing skills by hitting notes flying through six different lanes, amassing combos, and striving for the highest scores. Fans of Touhou music will be pleased to know that the game features over 160 reimagined tracks from the series, spanning across four levels of difficulty—though it should be noted that this number includes tracks accessible through paid DLC.
On the other hand, Danmaku Stage introduces a fresh blend of traditional shoot ’em up action and rhythm mechanics. Players hit the rhythmically timed notes on the sides to inflict damage on enemies and complete unique mission objectives inherent to each stage.
Touhou Danmaku Kagura offers a rich catalogue of music tracks, starting with 68 songs that pay homage to the original Touhou compositions. The creators have also planned for the release of four Music Pack DLCs, promising a total of 102 tracks to enjoy. Additionally, free DLC content is on the horizon, with the first update featuring the collaborative effort between Toby Fox and ZUN titled ‘U.N. Owen Was Hero?’, made available in time with the PC release.
In terms of narrative, players follow Reimu on her quest to piece together the Memory Fragments and revive Phantasia using the power of Danmaku Kagura. Meanwhile, Marisa sets off on her own adventure in search of Reimu, leading players to wonder if their paths will eventually cross.
With its promised arrival on the Nintendo Switch, Touhou Danmaku Kagura: Phantasia Lost is poised to charm rhythm game enthusiasts and Touhou devotees alike, as they experience the fusion of music and bullet-hell action on their favorite handheld device this fall.
