Thypoch Debuts Affordable $649 Full-Frame f/2.8 Zoom Lens

Thypoch Introduces an Affordable f/2.8 Full-Frame Zoom Lens With Premium Features

Thypoch has introduced a new full-frame f/2.8 zoom lens aimed at photographers and hybrid shooters who want strong performance without paying flagship prices. With a launch price of $649, the lens stands out as an appealing option for users looking for a fast, compact, and weather-protected zoom for everyday shooting, travel, portraits, events, and video work.

Although it arrives at a relatively accessible price point, Thypoch has not taken a simple approach to the optical design. The lens uses a complex construction made up of 16 elements arranged in 13 groups. Several of these elements feature aspherical surfaces, which are designed to reduce distortion, improve sharpness, and help keep the overall size of the lens more manageable.

According to the company’s MTF performance charts, the lens is capable of delivering very sharp results in the center of the frame, even when used wide open at f/2.8. As expected from a compact and bright full-frame zoom, sharpness becomes less consistent toward the edges of the image. This type of edge softness is not unusual in fast zoom lenses, especially those designed to balance portability, speed, and affordability.

The lens also includes several practical features that make it more versatile in real-world shooting conditions. Its body is rated IP53, giving it protection against dust and light rain. This makes it suitable for outdoor photography where weather conditions can change quickly, such as street photography, travel shoots, landscapes, or documentary work.

Another useful design choice is the internal zoom mechanism. The lens does not extend or change length while zooming, which improves handling and balance. This is especially helpful when using the lens on a gimbal, tripod, or video rig, where changes in weight distribution can be inconvenient.

For photographers who rely on creative filters, Thypoch has included a 67mm front filter thread. This allows users to attach ND filters, polarizers, protection filters, or diffusion filters without needing unusual adapter sizes. The lens also offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.3 meters, allowing for close-up shots with a maximum magnification of 0.21x. While it is not a dedicated macro lens, this close-focus capability adds flexibility for capturing details, food, products, flowers, and small subjects.

The lens supports firmware updates through a USB-C port located on the mount. This gives Thypoch the ability to improve performance, compatibility, or autofocus behavior over time. A physical switch is also included, allowing users to quickly move between autofocus and manual focus whenever needed.

With its f/2.8 aperture, full-frame coverage, weather-resistant body, internal zoom, USB-C firmware support, and competitive price, Thypoch’s new zoom lens could become an attractive choice for photographers who want a capable all-purpose lens without stretching their budget. It appears to target users who value strong center sharpness, reliable handling, and a compact design, while accepting some compromise in edge performance at wider apertures.
