AMD’s 2026 Laptop Challenge: Strong CPUs, But Integrated Graphics Need a Boost
The laptop processor race is heating up again. In 2025, the competition centered on Intel Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake going up against AMD Krackan Point and Strix Point. For 2026, the focus shifts to Intel Panther Lake versus AMD Gorgon Point.
On the CPU side, AMD remains highly competitive. Gorgon Point may be more of a refresh than a full redesign, using the same Zen 5 CPU cores as earlier chips, but performance is still strong. AMD continues to deliver impressive processing power for productivity, business laptops, and mobile workstations.
The bigger concern is integrated graphics.
Intel has made a major leap with its latest integrated GPU technology. The Panther Lake Core Ultra X7 and Core Ultra X9 chips, especially those equipped with the Intel Arc B390 iGPU, show a clear improvement in graphics performance. This puts pressure on AMD, which is still relying on RDNA 3+ integrated graphics in many of its current laptop processors.
That does not mean AMD is weak across the board. In entry-level and lower-power laptops, Radeon solutions such as the Radeon 860M can still compete well against Intel’s more basic Panther Lake integrated graphics. AMD also has Strix Halo, which remains a standout option for users who want serious integrated GPU performance. In fact, Intel Panther Lake does not currently match Strix Halo in raw graphics capability.
The problem appears in the middle of the market.
This is where AMD’s older Strix Point-class graphics solutions are starting to show their age. A good example is the HP ZBook 8 G2a 14, an entry-level mobile workstation powered by the AMD Ryzen 9 HX 470. As a processor, the Ryzen 9 HX 470 is strong and performs well against Intel’s newer Panther Lake chips in CPU-focused tasks.
However, the chip is paired with the AMD Radeon 890M, an integrated GPU that first appeared in 2024. By 2026 standards, it is no longer as competitive as it once was. In graphics benchmarks, Intel’s Arc B390 iGPU is around 65 percent faster than the Radeon 890M. That is a significant gap, especially because the Arc B390 is available in rival laptops in the same class, including Intel-based versions of the same workstation family, such as the HP ZBook 8 G2i 14.
For buyers comparing AMD and Intel business laptops, this difference matters. CPU performance is important, but integrated graphics now play a larger role in everyday workloads. Modern professionals often need GPU acceleration for creative apps, light 3D work, AI-enhanced software, video editing, multi-display setups, and smoother general performance. A weaker iGPU can make an otherwise powerful laptop feel less future-ready.
AMD still has excellent laptop processors, and its high-end integrated graphics options remain impressive where available. Strix Halo, in particular, shows what AMD can do when it prioritizes GPU performance. The issue is availability and product coverage. Strix Halo is not found in most mainstream laptops, while more common AMD chips are still using graphics hardware that now struggles against Intel’s latest integrated GPU offerings.
The takeaway is clear: AMD does not have a CPU problem in 2026. Its Zen 5-based mobile processors remain fast, efficient, and competitive. But in the mid-range laptop segment, AMD needs stronger integrated graphics to keep pace with Intel Panther Lake and the Arc B390.
As laptops continue to become thinner, lighter, and more dependent on integrated graphics rather than dedicated GPUs, iGPU performance will only become more important. AMD has proven it can build powerful graphics solutions, but now it needs to bring that strength to more mainstream processors if it wants to stay fully competitive in the next generation of premium and business laptops.
