Tesla is ramping up efforts to collect autonomous driving data by making its Full Self-Driving (FSD) package more accessible. In anticipation of the highly publicized Robotaxi reveal set for August 8, Tesla is implementing several strategies to expand the user base for its FSD technology.
In an unprecedented move, Tesla has significantly reduced the monthly subscription price of FSD in the United States, halving it from $199 to $99. This price cut is designed to attract more users to the service, which could help Tesla gather the necessary mileage data to hone the system’s capabilities. The success of this approach, however, will depend on how many Tesla owners are enticed by the reduced price, as the outright purchase cost of $12,000 for the FSD package remains unchanged.
Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, recently hinted at the Robotaxi reveal via a cryptic tweet that stated “Tesla Robotaxi unveil on 8/8”. Traditionally, such unveilings by Musk are followed by actual product launches much further down the line. Yet, for the Robotaxi concept to reach fruition, Tesla needs to collect a significant amount of real-world driving data to validate the safety and reliability of their autonomous vehicles to regulators.
To amass this data, Tesla has broadened the FSD availability by making free transfers a common feature and offering 30-day trials along with feature tutorials. The intent is to demonstrate to regulators the safety of autonomous cars, potentially surpassing human driver capabilities. As of now, Tesla has not yet sought permits for Robotaxi operations in states that have such requirements, as confirmed by regulatory authorities.
Although Tesla is working towards expanding its autonomous driving technology, a direct price reduction of the FSD package could alarm investors. As an alternative, the reduced monthly subscription model appears to be Tesla’s strategy of choice for driving adoption, aiming to contribute to a greater amount of driven miles for regulatory review.
While Tesla ventures into the next stages of autonomous vehicle technology, the question remains on how quickly and effectively Tesla can transition from data collection to actual service deployment, particularly in the Robotaxi domain. This move to lower subscription costs represents another step in Tesla’s journey towards achieving widespread, safe, and regulatory-approved autonomous driving.
