Tesla has recently introduced a new version of the popular Model Y that boasts the longest range yet, setting a new standard for efficiency within the electric SUV market. The latest Model Y trim, termed the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), has caught the attention of consumers and enthusiasts alike due to its impressive energy consumption rate of just 14.9 kWh per 100 km.
To put this into perspective, the all-wheel drive (AWD) iteration of the Model Y consumes about 2 kWh more over the same distance, underscoring the latest model’s exceptional efficiency. The Model Y Long Range RWD finds its position in the lineup strategically placed between the standard RWD option, which contains Chinese lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, and the Long Range AWD variant that features Panasonic’s 2170 cells.
The enhanced efficiency of the Model Y Long Range RWD can be partially attributed to its utilization of Panasonic’s 2170 cells — the same used in the AWD model — yet its range is extended due to operating with one less electric motor, therefore experiencing reduced energy drain.
Boasting a range of 600 km (373 miles) on 19-inch wheels according to Europe’s WLTP cycle, this model is rolling out as an appealing option for European consumers initially. While the EPA’s stricter estimates might adjust the actual range closer to 340 miles per charge, this figure remains above what the Long Range variant offers in the U.S. market.
The Berlin-made Model Y is set to be initially available in a number of European countries including Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Spain, Germany, Norway, and Lithuania, with Lithuania featuring the most competitive pricing at €39,990 ($42,800). This attractive price point has the potential to draw considerable interest from buyers across the continent.
Offering a total of four different trims in Europe, where the Model Y was the top-selling vehicle in 2023, Tesla continues to expand its reach. Customers opting for a more personalized touch can also choose the Berlin-exclusive Midnight Cherry Red multi-coat paint, which requires an additional investment of €2,600.
The Model Y Long Range RWD, along with its siblings, is also compatible with the robust 80A Tesla Gen 2 Wall Connector, that comes with a 24′ cable, providing a speedy and convenient charging solution for Tesla owners.
Tesla’s new Model Y variant not only offers a longer range and better efficiency but also comes at a competitive price, potentially offering a compelling electric vehicle solution for consumers looking to maximize their driving range while keeping operating costs low. Its release underscores the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability in the electric vehicle market.
