Tesla Discontinues Device Charging in Sentry Mode

Tesla’s latest software update, version 2024.32.6, introduces exciting changes for its customers, particularly those driving the refreshed Model S and Model X. Among the updates is an enhancement to the Sentry Mode feature: Light Pulsing. This clever addition gently flashes the vehicle’s headlights in a pulsing manner when a potential threat is detected, serving as a visual deterrent.

However, not all aspects of the new software update will sit well with Tesla owners. In line with earlier statements by Tesla’s former battery chief about reducing energy consumption, the company has made a significant change that affects all Tesla models except the Cybertruck. The update disables the 12V outlets and USB ports when the car is in Sentry Mode. This means that any devices previously plugged in, from portable fridges and laptops to smartphones, will no longer receive power if the vehicle is in this mode.

While you can still use Camp Mode to power these devices, this mode also leaves the vehicle unlocked, which directly contradicts the security intent of Sentry Mode. This change has sparked frustration among Tesla users. Some drivers are particularly peeved, imagining their warm beverages in a powerless fridge.

Tesla has yet to determine the true impact of this power cut on battery conservation, but customer feedback is already making its way to the company’s upper management. Tesla’s approach to balancing security features and practical usage continues to evolve, with customer experience likely playing a significant role in future updates. Stay tuned as the company navigates these competing priorities, seeking the perfect synergy between technology and user satisfaction.
