Temu is now adding hefty “import charges” of approximately 145% due to tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump on goods shipped from China. This has resulted in fees that often surpass the cost of products themselves, sometimes more than doubling the total price of an order. For instance, a summer dress priced at $18.47 on Temu now ends up costing $44.68 when an additional $26.21 in import charges is included.
While Shein has also increased prices, it has not introduced a similar import charge.
These pricing adjustments follow recent warnings from both Temu and Shein regarding upcoming price hikes for U.S. customers, starting April 25, as a direct response to the tariffs. The 145% tariff on Chinese products, combined with the elimination of a customs exemption that previously allowed goods valued under $800 to enter the U.S. duty-free, has significantly disrupted both platforms’ business models.
