As Huawei prepares to launch the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, TECNO, another Chinese tech giant, has made headlines by introducing the Phantom Ultimate 2, a concept device featuring three displays that can be folded into a sleek handset and unfolded to transform into a 10-inch tablet. This device comes with several notable specifications worth exploring.
The TECNO Phantom Ultimate 2 is remarkably thin, measuring just 11.1mm when folded. This makes it thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which has a thickness of 12.1mm. In its folded state, the device showcases a 6.48-inch screen, maintaining a compact form factor.
The Phantom Ultimate 2 features an OLED panel with a maximum resolution of 3K when fully unfolded into a 10-inch tablet. TECNO claims that the device’s hinges have been rigorously tested to endure up to 300,000 folds along with 2100MPa strength. To achieve its slim profile, TECNO has employed a new hinge design and the industry’s thinnest battery cover, which is crafted from Titan Advanced Fiber material and measures only 0.25mm thick.
Although applications may initially struggle to adapt to this new form factor, TECNO has optimized wallpapers to adjust seamlessly. The device supports various multitasking modes, accommodating different folding and unfolding configurations. Despite the impressive technology, TECNO has not disclosed a launch date for the Phantom Ultimate 2.
This development occurs amidst reports that Huawei is encountering challenges with its tri-fold smartphone, such as overheating and software optimization issues. Additionally, the high cost of prototypes, reportedly around $5,000, raises questions about the commercial viability of such devices. However, there is hope that tri-fold smartphones will become more widely adopted in the future.
