TCL’s Tri-Fold Portable OLED Monitor Shows the Future of Laptop Displays
TCL has showcased a striking tri-fold portable OLED monitor that expands from a compact 16-inch screen into a much larger 28-inch display. Built by CSOT, TCL’s display division, the concept points toward a future where laptop screens, portable monitors, and ultrawide displays could merge into one flexible device.
Unlike typical foldable screens that use a single crease, this prototype features two fold lines, allowing the panel to open into a wide, immersive display while still folding down to a size that could fit inside a bag. CSOT says the screen can fold to a tight 1.8 mm bend radius, while the panel measures only 4.48 mm thick when fully unfolded. That combination of slimness and flexibility could make it especially appealing for professionals, creators, and travelers who want a larger workspace without carrying a bulky monitor.
The idea is simple but powerful: offer the portability of a laptop display with the screen space of an ultrawide monitor. For people who work on the move, such as digital nomads, designers, programmers, video editors, and business users, a tri-fold OLED monitor could make multitasking far easier without requiring a full desktop setup.
What makes this TCL prototype especially interesting is not only the tri-fold design, but also the way the OLED panel is manufactured. The display uses inkjet-printed OLED technology, often called IJP OLED. This production method has been in development for years and could become an important step forward for flexible and large-format OLED screens.
Traditional OLED panels are usually made by depositing red, green, and blue subpixels through a fine metal mask using vacuum evaporation. Inkjet printing works differently. Instead of relying on a mask, the organic OLED materials are printed directly onto the display substrate, somewhat like how an inkjet printer places ink onto paper.
This approach has several potential advantages. It can reduce material waste, improve production efficiency, and make it easier to manufacture larger or more unusual display shapes. Since folding and tri-folding screens are more complex than standard flat panels, removing the need for a fine metal mask could simplify production and help lower costs over time.
Industry estimates have suggested that inkjet OLED production could reduce manufacturing costs significantly compared with conventional OLED methods. If those savings can be achieved at scale, devices like foldable monitors, rollable tablets, and ultra-thin portable displays may become more affordable and widely available.
Alongside the tri-fold portable OLED monitor, TCL has also demonstrated other inkjet-printed OLED panels. These include a 14-inch 2K OLED laptop panel with 99% DCI-P3 color coverage and an anti-glare coating, as well as an updated 27-inch 4K OLED monitor panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 500 nits of full-screen brightness.
These panels show that TCL is looking beyond smartphones and televisions. The company appears to be targeting the next generation of mobile productivity displays, premium laptop screens, and high-performance desktop monitors.
However, the tri-fold OLED monitor is still a concept rather than a product ready for store shelves. TCL has been showing similar display prototypes at major technology events, which suggests the company is still refining the design, durability, manufacturing process, and commercial potential.
Even so, the technology is promising. A portable OLED monitor that unfolds into a 28-inch workspace could solve a real problem for users who need more screen space but do not want to carry a large external display. If inkjet OLED manufacturing delivers the expected cost benefits, tri-fold portable monitors could eventually become practical products rather than futuristic demos.
For now, TCL’s tri-fold OLED display is best seen as a preview of where screen technology may be heading. Thinner panels, flexible form factors, richer OLED color, and more efficient manufacturing could reshape laptops and portable monitors in the coming years. If TCL can turn this concept into a durable, affordable product, it may open the door to a new category of foldable productivity displays.
