TCL Unveils 50 NXTPAPER Smartphones Featuring Quasi E-Ink Mode Activation Button

TCL has unveiled its latest additions to the TCL 50 series, introducing the TCL 50 NXTPAPER 5G and the TCL 50 Pro NXTPAPER 5G at IFA 2024. These new smartphones push the boundaries with TCL’s proprietary NXTPAPER technology, designed to emulate an E Ink display for a better reading experience.

These models feature a unique 6.8-inch 120Hz FHD+ NXTPAPER display with a matte finish to reduce glare. A standout characteristic of both phones is the NXTPAPER Key, a dedicated slider on the side. This key allows users to toggle between three distinct screen modes tailored for different types of content consumption.

The default mode, Color Paper, is perfect for enjoying colorful comics and graphics. The second, Ink Paper mode, gives a black-and-white effect for a classic reading feel, ideal for less graphical content. The third mode, called Max Ink, turns the screen fully monochrome and mutes notifications to ensure uninterrupted reading. Thanks to this efficient feature, the 5,010mAh battery can support up to seven days of reading and up to 26 days on standby—a remarkable feat, though not quite at Kindle’s level.

Under the hood, both devices come equipped with MediaTek’s Dimensity 6300 processor and 8GB of RAM. Storage differences set the two models apart: the TCL 50 NXTPAPER 5G offers 256GB of storage, while the Pro version boasts 512GB. Both variants support expandable storage options.

Camera capabilities are robust, featuring a 108MP main camera, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 2MP macro lens on both models. However, the standard version sports an 8MP front camera, whereas the Pro model steps it up with a 32MP selfie shooter.

Additional features include 33W fast charging, eSIM support in select markets, NFC, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Face Unlock, stereo speakers, and an audio jack. They come preloaded with Android 14 and will receive two OS upgrades and security updates through to 2029.

Priced at €299, the TCL 50 Pro NXTPAPER 5G will be available in Europe and Latin America, complete with a charger, a flip case, and a T-Pen stylus. The standard TCL 50 NXTPAPER 5G, retailing at €229, will be available in Europe without these additional accessories.

If you’re looking for a smartphone that doubles as an e-reader, these new TCL NXTPAPER models offer a compelling option with their versatile display modes and powerful specs.
