Researchers at UNSW Sydney have made a breakthrough with an innovative organic proton battery that boasts remarkable capacity, swift charging times, and eco-friendliness. With lithium reserves gradually depleting, the hunt for sustainable alternatives becomes ever more crucial.

This cutting-edge proton battery is based on a freshly crafted organic compound, tetraamino-benzoquinone (TABQ), heralding a promising replacement for the widely used lithium-ion batteries. Proton batteries, unlike their lithium counterparts, do not depend on lithium—a finite resource with accessibility issues and recycling challenges. Instead, they employ TABQ, derived from tetrachloro-benzoquinone (TCBQ), which has been strategically modified to enhance its capacity for storing and converting energy efficiently.

In essence, proton batteries function by converting chemical energy into electrical energy via an anode and a cathode. In this case, TABQ serves as the anode due to its exceptional proton retention, while TCBQ is used for the cathode. Water plays a pivotal role in facilitating proton movement between these components, offering a safer alternative to the highly flammable lithium salts typically used in conventional batteries.

Early tests of this innovative battery have been promising, with successful functioning across 3,500 charge cycles. Proton batteries flaunt high capacity and power density, attributed to TABQ’s proficiency in handling protons. The rapid movement of protons ensures quicker charging times, and the utilization of water enhances safety.

Although the synthesis of TABQ isn’t yet budget-friendly, the reliance on abundant organic materials presents an optimistic outlook for sustainable manufacturing processes. These encouraging results fuel hopes for accelerated advancements in this powerful, environmentally-conscious technology.
