Super Smash Bros. Rumored to Join Nintendo 64 Lineup on Nintendo Switch Online

Super Smash Bros., a beloved classic from the N64 era, remains missing from Nintendo Switch Online’s library, much to the disappointment of fans. However, a recent leak has sparked hope that the game might soon be available to stream on the Switch. An official video showcasing Nintendo Classics includes box art that some believe belongs to the original 1999 release of Super Smash Bros.

Fans have been eagerly requesting the N64 version of Super Smash Bros. to join the streaming service. Both Reddit and Famiboards users have noticed intriguing evidence suggesting its addition. The potential clue comes from a video that highlights Nintendo Classics features, where a background image seems to align with the game’s iconic box art. Around the 40-second mark, viewers spotted a blur of colors that resemble the cover, featuring recognizable elements like the Mario logo. Nonetheless, skeptics argue it might be similar to other N64 games, such as Banjo-Kazooie or Mischief Makers.

Though earlier promotional videos have hinted at Nintendo Classics that never made it to the platform, Nintendo’s recent efforts have focused on reviving retro titles for both the Switch and its successor. Some speculate that Super Smash Bros.’ exclusion is to avoid impacting sales of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, though it’s been seven years since that game’s debut on the original Switch. With series creator Masahiro Sakurai now concentrating on Kirby Air Riders, another Super Smash Bros. installment could be on the horizon.

Adding to the anticipation, the introduction of the GameCube controller for the Switch 2 has delighted Super Smash Bros. Melee enthusiasts. Despite this, and the console becoming part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, Melee itself remains absent. If this latest box art leak proves to be accurate, the original Super Smash Bros. is a promising candidate for joining the collection soon.
