New Super Smash Bros. Game Rumored for Switch 2 Ahead of September Nintendo Direct
Nintendo fans may have more than a Zelda remake to look forward to during the upcoming September Nintendo Direct events. While the rumored The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is expected to be one of the biggest reveals on September 8, speculation is now growing around another major first-party project: a new Super Smash Bros. game for Switch 2.
The rumor comes from Malo392, a relatively low-profile leaker who gained attention earlier in 2026 after sharing several claims that later appeared to line up with official announcements and other credible reports. Back in March, Malo392 mentioned an Ocarina of Time remake and also pointed to a classic-style Star Fox project before it became widely discussed.
Now, fans are revisiting Malo392’s older YouTube comments after the leaker appeared to hint at Nintendo Direct presentations planned for September 8 and September 9. One comment in particular has caught the attention of the Smash community. Under a video discussing the possibility of a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate version for Switch 2, Malo392 reportedly responded that it would not simply be an enhanced edition, claiming instead that “a new Smash is in the works.”
That single comment has sparked major excitement, especially because Super Smash Bros. Ultimate remains one of Nintendo’s biggest and most successful Switch games. Released in 2018, the game became a landmark entry in the series thanks to its massive roster, crossover appeal, and long-running DLC support. Even years later, it continues to have an active competitive and casual player base.
A new Super Smash Bros. game for Switch 2 would be a huge announcement, but there is still plenty of uncertainty. Some fans believe Nintendo may choose to release an upgraded version of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the new hardware instead. Since the original Switch game is expected to remain playable through backward compatibility, an enhanced edition could improve performance, resolution, loading times, online features, or even introduce new fighters and stages.
However, the wording of the latest rumor suggests Nintendo may be planning something more ambitious than a simple upgrade. If true, a brand-new Super Smash Bros. entry could mark the next major evolution of the franchise on Switch 2.
There has also been previous talk of a new Smash-related project. Earlier in 2026, insider Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly claimed that another Super Smash Bros. game was planned, though he later clarified that it might not necessarily be a completely new mainline title. That leaves room for several possibilities, including a deluxe version, a reboot-style entry, or a new installment built specifically for Nintendo’s next-generation console.
The biggest question is timing. Even if a new Super Smash Bros. game is in development, it may still be years away. Masahiro Sakurai, the creator most closely associated with the series, only recently finished work on Kirby Air Riders, which launched in November 2025. If he is involved in the next Smash project, development would likely require a long production cycle due to the scale of the roster, licensing negotiations, gameplay balancing, and online infrastructure.
Because of that, some fans are skeptical that a new Smash game would be fully revealed during the September Nintendo Direct. At most, Nintendo might offer a very early teaser or save the announcement for a later showcase when the project is further along.
The upcoming Direct events may also include other rumored first-party Switch 2 games. Malo392 and other insiders have suggested that a new 3D Mario game could be targeting 2027. There is also speculation about a possible Nintendogs revival, which would make sense for Switch 2 if the system emphasizes touchscreen features, microphone support, and improved Joy-Con controls.
For now, Nintendo has not confirmed a new Super Smash Bros. game, a Switch 2 upgrade for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, or the rumored Ocarina of Time remake. Still, with September’s Nintendo Direct presentations approaching, excitement is building quickly.
If the rumors are accurate, Switch 2 could be preparing for a powerful lineup of first-party games, with Zelda, Mario, Star Fox, Nintendogs, and Super Smash Bros. all potentially playing a role in Nintendo’s next era.
