Bethesda is giving Starfield a major new moment with a long-awaited PlayStation 5 release and a sizable content rollout aimed at both newcomers and long-time captains. After two years of staying exclusive to PC and Xbox consoles, Starfield is officially landing on PS5 on April 7. That same day, current players across PC and Xbox will receive the Free Lanes Update alongside a brand-new paid story expansion, Terran Armada.
The Free Lanes Update looks like one of Starfield’s biggest gameplay upgrades in a while, and it’s designed to make space travel feel more hands-on. The headline feature is cruise mode, which lets you manually fly between planets rather than relying entirely on fast travel. It’s a shift that encourages you to spend more time inside the ship you built, interact more often with your crew, and experience the in-between moments of space exploration. To keep those journeys from feeling too quiet, cruise mode can also be disrupted by unexpected pirate encounters and other points of interest.
Loot and progression are getting a boost, too. Bethesda is introducing new item tiers that sit above Legendary, called Superior and Exceptional. There’s also a fresh resource to hunt down across the galaxy: X-Tech. You can find it during combat, collect it from defeated enemies, and use it to further customize your gear, including rerolling legendary effects—something many players will likely welcome if they’ve been chasing specific builds.
For outpost fans, Free Lanes adds quality-of-life improvements that make managing multiple bases less of a chore. A shared container system allows faster resource transfers across your network of outposts, and you’ll even be able to keep a pet at each location, adding a small but charming personal touch to your colonies.
Character progression is being smoothed out as well. Starborn abilities can now be upgraded without requiring New Game+, removing a major barrier for players who want to develop those powers without restarting. And for those who do choose to jump into NG+, Bethesda is adding the ability to carry over items from a previous playthrough, making the reset far less punishing.
There’s also fresh content to explore through a new in-game location called Anchorpoint Station. It’s positioned as a new hub featuring additional vendors, quests, ship modules, and more—exactly the kind of content drop that tends to pull players back in, especially when paired with a big patch.
Alongside the free update, Bethesda is launching Terran Armada, a new story DLC. It will be included at no extra cost for Premium Edition owners, while everyone else can purchase it for $10 as an upgrade. That price point is notably easier to swallow compared to the earlier Shattered Space expansion, which arrived with a $40 cost.
As for the PlayStation 5 release, Starfield’s base game is priced at $49.99, while the Premium Edition costs $69.99. The Premium version bundles Shattered Space, Terran Armada, and additional in-game extras, making it the all-in option for players who want the full content slate from day one.
With the PS5 launch finally happening and Free Lanes shaping up to be a feature-packed update, April 7 is set to be one of Starfield’s most important days yet—whether you’re starting fresh on a new platform or returning to see how much the galaxy has changed.
