Square Enix is taking a firmer stance than ever on cyberbullying and online harassment tied to Final Fantasy XIV, and the company has now confirmed another legal win aimed at protecting its development and operations staff. The newest case involves a Final Fantasy 14 content creator accused of posting videos that allegedly targeted employees and executives, marking the second high-profile incident in just a few weeks.
In an official statement dated April 20, Square Enix said it identified an uploader on a video-sharing platform who had posted multiple videos the company believes harmed the reputation of people working on Final Fantasy 14. According to Square Enix, the dispute ended in a settlement that included three major outcomes: a formal apology from the uploader, payment of compensation, and an agreement prohibiting similar behavior going forward.
Square Enix also explained that the matter moved forward after the company filed a legal request to disclose the uploader’s information, which the court approved. Following the settlement, the videos in question and the uploader’s account were removed.
While Square Enix noted that it values player feedback and uses customer opinions to improve the game, it drew a clear line between criticism and harassment. The company described behavior such as personal attacks, defamation, threats of harm, and interference with business operations as a serious issue—one that threatens employee safety and damages the work environment.
This announcement follows a similar situation from March, when Square Enix pursued legal action against a Japanese news blog accused of publishing content that allegedly crossed into harassment. In that case, the company sought court approval to identify the anonymous administrator, then reached an agreement that resulted in the blog shutting down permanently along with a public apology.
Around the same time, another FF14-focused news aggregator chose to close its site voluntarily. In a public message, the operator said they had reconsidered the responsibility that comes with sharing information online and issued an apology to the Final Fantasy 14 development and operations team for the trouble caused.
Taken together, these actions signal a broader crackdown on harmful behavior aimed at Square Enix staff, especially where the company believes online content moves beyond commentary and into targeted harassment. For the Final Fantasy XIV community, it also reinforces a growing reality across the gaming industry: platforms may feel anonymous, but serious accusations, threats, and defamation can still carry real-world consequences—especially when companies decide to take legal steps to protect their employees.
