Spotify Enhances Lyrics with Offline Viewing and Expanded Translation Support

Spotify has announced a fresh set of updates to its in-app lyrics feature, making it easier to follow, share, and understand songs—whether you’re listening online or not. The update introduces global lyrics translations, adds offline lyrics viewing for Premium subscribers, and moves lyrics to a more prominent spot in the Now Playing screen.

One of the biggest changes is offline lyrics. Spotify is positioning this as a Premium-only perk, meaning subscribers will be able to pull up song lyrics even when they don’t have a connection. It’s also a clear signal that Spotify continues to treat lyrics as a feature that can nudge free listeners toward upgrading—especially after earlier attempts to restrict lyrics access caused frustration among users.

Lyrics are also getting a new home inside the app. Instead of being tucked away, they’ll now appear directly beneath the album artwork or the short looping video that plays during a track. Spotify says internal testing showed that placing lyrics closer to the center of the listening experience increased engagement. If you like sharing lines from your favorite songs, Spotify notes you’ll still be able to post lyric snippets to social media from the Now Playing view.

Spotify is also expanding lyrics translations worldwide. First introduced in 2022, translations were previously limited to a smaller number of markets. Now, when a song supports it, listeners can tap the translate icon on the lyrics card to display translated lines beneath the original lyrics. Translations will automatically default to the language set on your device, making it more seamless for people listening to music in other languages.

Alongside these upgrades, Spotify is rolling out what it calls lyric previews across the globe for both free and paid users on iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. While Premium members get the offline advantage, the broader redesign and placement update will be available across listener tiers.

These changes arrive after a long evolution of lyrics inside Spotify. For years, the company moved slowly on full lyrics support due to licensing hurdles. After sustained demand, Spotify ultimately launched real-time lyrics globally in 2021, following earlier limited-market availability and tests that began in 2019. Before real-time lyrics became widely available, Spotify offered a “behind the lyrics” experience that mixed partial lyrics with song trivia.

With offline access, worldwide translations, and a more visible layout, Spotify is betting that lyrics will become an even bigger part of how people listen—and another reason some users may decide Premium is worth it.
