Sony’s NW-ZX900 Walkman Debuts With Premium Hi-Fi Sound and Sleek Design Upgrades

Sony Walkman NW-ZX900 debuts with premium audio upgrades, longer battery life, and Android streaming support

Sony is giving its high-resolution portable music player lineup a serious upgrade with the new Walkman NW-ZX900. Designed for listeners who want dedicated hi-fi audio on the go, the latest model brings improvements to sound quality, internal components, battery life, and everyday usability.

At the heart of the Sony Walkman NW-ZX900 is the company’s S-Master HX digital amplifier with an integrated DAC. Sony has paired it with an upgraded power supply, newly selected capacitors, a copper heatsink, and two crystal oscillators. This is a notable step forward for the ZX series, as dual crystal oscillator technology was previously found in Sony’s higher-end WM1 series.

The result is a portable music player built for cleaner, more stable audio playback with reduced noise and improved precision. The NW-ZX900 supports a wide range of popular audio formats, including high-resolution files up to 32-bit/384 kHz, along with DSD playback.

Sony has also included DSEE Ultimate, a feature designed to enhance compressed audio files and bring them closer to high-resolution quality. For listeners who prefer a softer, more nostalgic sound signature, the device also offers a vinyl processor that aims to recreate the warmth and character of analog playback.

The Walkman NW-ZX900 features a 5-inch touchscreen, keeping the familiar modern design of Sony’s recent premium music players. However, one of the biggest improvements is battery life. Sony claims the device can deliver up to 38 hours of FLAC playback, which is nearly double the endurance of its predecessor.

Because the NW-ZX900 runs on Android and includes Wi-Fi, users can install and use music streaming apps, making it suitable for both local high-resolution audio files and online music services. Sony has also added useful software features, including a system-wide equalizer for custom sound tuning.

Another charming detail is the cassette-style playback visualization, a nostalgic touch that fits perfectly with the Walkman brand’s long history in portable music.

The Sony Walkman NW-ZX900 is scheduled to launch in Japan on November 27 with a price of ¥214,500, which is approximately $1,360. Sony has not yet announced global availability, though the previous Walkman NW-ZX707 was released in international markets, so a wider launch remains possible.

With stronger audio hardware, extended battery life, Android app support, and premium playback features, the Sony Walkman NW-ZX900 looks positioned as a serious option for audiophiles who still prefer a dedicated music player over using a smartphone for high-quality listening.
