Sony Set to Compete with Tesla’s Electric Vehicle Range with Upcoming ‘PlayStation’ Sedan and Future EV Models

Sony is gearing up to make a grand entrance into the United States electric vehicle market through its partnership with Honda, under the brand name Afeela. With an ambitious plan to have three new Afeela models available in the US by 2028, Sony aims to rival Tesla with its upcoming fleet of electric vehicles.

At the CES 2024 expo, Sony Honda Mobility made a splash by remotely controlling their first electric car with a PlayStation 5 DualSense controller. This demonstration underscored the unique entertainment features that the collaboration plans to integrate into their vehicles.

The initial focus for Sony is to introduce a performance electric sedan in the US market by 2025. This model is expected to be priced competitively against the Tesla Model S, but with the aim of fitting into the price range of the speculated 2024 Model 3 Performance. However, the company’s vision extends beyond this with plans to challenge the Tesla Model Y with an electric SUV set to arrive in 2027. Following that, an affordable mass-market compact EV, which is anticipated to benefit from Honda’s expertise and component sharing with its own standalone models, is scheduled to release in 2028.

Sony’s expansion into the EV market aligns with the direction taken by Tesla, which has been developing a budget-friendly electric car known as the Model 2. While Tesla is pushing towards mass production, Sony and Honda are also set to have a contender in this segment. Although details on pricing are still under wraps, the Afeela compact EV is expected to be comparably sized to a VW Golf hatch or a Toyota Corolla, perhaps with design elements reminiscent of Honda’s Civic.

As Sony forges ahead with its plans to integrate entertainment features into its EVs, the market is eagerly watching to see how their ‘PlayStation’ Afeela sedan will fare upon its anticipated US release in 2025. With considerable market changes in the electric vehicle landscape expected over the next few years, Sony’s entrance with its Afeela brand could further stimulate the competition with industry leaders like Tesla.

For those interested in electric vehicle accessories, one noteworthy product is the 80A Tesla Gen 2 Wall Connector, which comes with a 24′ cable and is available on Amazon.

The ‘PlayStation’ Afeela sedan represents just the beginning of Sony’s venture with Honda into the electric vehicle market as they prepare to take on established giants and offer consumers innovative options in sustainable transportation.
