The Last of Us Part II Remastered PC Multiplayer Mod Cancelled After Sony Request
A fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PC has been cancelled after its creator received a formal request to stop development on the project on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The mod, created by Speclizer, had been in development since January 2026 and was expected to launch publicly later this month. While the cancellation is disappointing for fans who were looking forward to trying it, Speclizer confirmed that the request will be respected and that work on the mod has now ended. The creator is instead shifting focus to an original game project.
The cancelled mod was designed to bring a competitive multiplayer experience to The Last of Us Part II Remastered, something the official release never included. Planned features reportedly included 4v4 online matches, matchmaking, custom loadouts, leaderboards, and custom maps inspired by locations from the game’s campaign.
Earlier footage shared in July showed the project making clear progress. What began as limited 1v1 testing had expanded to support up to eight players in a match. Speclizer was also studying Naughty Dog’s animation synchronization methods in an effort to make online character movement feel smoother and more natural during multiplayer gameplay.
Sony has not publicly commented on the request, so the exact reason behind the shutdown remains unclear. It is not known whether the decision was based on legal concerns, commercial considerations, or the use of official game assets in an unofficial online project. The mod had also received support through Speclizer’s Patreon, which may have increased attention around the project, though that has not been confirmed as the reason for Sony’s action.
The news is especially frustrating for The Last of Us fans because Naughty Dog officially cancelled its own standalone multiplayer game, The Last of Us Online, in 2023. That project was expected to expand on the series’ multiplayer legacy, but it was ultimately abandoned so the studio could continue focusing on single-player story-driven games.
For a brief moment, the fan-made PC mod looked like it might offer players an unofficial alternative. With 4v4 matches, competitive systems, and campaign-inspired maps in development, it had the potential to fill a gap that many fans have been discussing for years.
Now, both the official multiplayer project and the unofficial mod are no longer moving forward, leaving The Last of Us Part II Remastered as a single-player experience on PC. For players hoping to explore the game’s tense survival mechanics in online matches, the wait for a true multiplayer return continues.
