In an unexpected twist, Sony has taken action against a widely beloved fan-created patch for Bloodborne. The patch, known for enabling the game to run at an impressive sixty frames per second, has been the pride of its community since its release in 2021. This modification effectively doubled the performance of the game, initially capped at thirty frames per second in its official version.
What makes this situation particularly peculiar is Sony’s long-standing awareness and apparent acceptance of the patch. The modder behind the project, Lance McDonald, even had a memorable encounter with Shuhei Yoshida, a former PlayStation executive. During this meeting, McDonald detailed the innovations of the 60 FPS patch. Instead of expressing concern, Yoshida reportedly found the concept entertaining and impressive.
The patch was never marketed as an official Sony product. Players had to perform a “jailbreaking” process on their PS4s and go through several steps to experience the enhanced performance. Those who ventured to try it were overwhelmingly pleased, and the patch gained a loyal fanbase, becoming the most popular fan modification for the game.
However, this celebrated project has recently met its demise. Lance McDonald took to social media to announce his compliance with Sony’s DMCA takedown notice, removing all available links to the patch online.
Bloodborne was released exclusively for the PlayStation 4 nearly ten years ago in 2015. Despite its age, the passion of its fanbase continues, fueled by a longing for improved performance and new experiences within the beloved universe.
