Snapchat Debuts Its First Open-Prompt AI Lens, Free for U.S. Users

Snapchat just opened up its Imagine Lens to everyone, turning its AI-powered, prompt-based image generator into a free creative tool for all users. First introduced in September for paying subscribers, the Imagine Lens now lets anyone edit their Snaps with custom prompts or generate entirely new images on the fly.

Type what you want to see, snap, and watch the Lens do the rest. Ask it to turn your selfie into an alien, conjure up a grumpy cat, try on Halloween costume ideas, or reimagine your friend with a fresh style. Once you’re happy with the results, share them with friends, post to your Story, or export beyond the app.

This broader release arrives as AI creation tools rapidly evolve across social platforms. New video-generation apps from major players like Meta and OpenAI are capturing attention with advanced features that go beyond still images. One example allows people to create shareable AI personas from a one-time video and audio recording, so friends can appear together in AI-generated videos. In that context, making a powerful image-generation Lens free is a smart move to keep Snapchat’s creative ecosystem vibrant.

Previously limited to Lens+ and Snapchat Platinum subscribers, the Imagine Lens now provides a limited number of free image generations for all users. The rollout starts in the United States, with Canada, Great Britain, and Australia next on the list and more regions planned after that.

Finding it is easy. Look near the front of the in-app Lens Carousel, or search by name. Tap the caption area to enter your own prompt, or pick from preloaded suggestions if you need inspiration.

Snapchat says its community interacts with Lenses more than 8 billion times a day—giving the Imagine Lens a massive stage. With fast, fun, and flexible AI image creation now just a prompt away, expect a wave of inventive Snaps to hit Stories and chats everywhere.
