Created by developer @konekone2026, Cat Gatekeeper is a quirky productivity plug-in built to curb excessive time spent on popular social media platforms. The idea is simple: you choose a time limit, and once you’ve exceeded it, a large cat pops up and settles in across your browser—nearly filling the screen so it becomes much harder to keep scrolling.
The cat doesn’t stay forever. Cat Gatekeeper also lets you set how long this “forced break” lasts. After the countdown ends, the cat disappears and your screen is freed up again, letting you return to what you were doing—ideally with a bit more intention than before.
The concept is inspired by a classic cat-owner scenario: the moment you try to get work done, your cat decides your keyboard (or your attention) is the perfect place to sit. Cat Gatekeeper turns that real-world interruption into a digital one, aimed directly at endless feeds and autoplay content.
Right now, Cat Gatekeeper is designed specifically for social platforms and supports YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and X. The timer only counts when one of those sites is open in a tab, and it resets when you switch away to another active app—so it’s not trying to police your entire browsing life, just the scrolling-heavy destinations that tend to swallow time.
The developer calls it the “world’s cutest forced break app,” and it’s meant to be more playful than punishing—an interruption you’ll actually tolerate, maybe even enjoy, while it nudges you to step back.
There’s also a privacy-friendly detail worth noting. According to its listing information, the extension does not collect user data, which should be reassuring for anyone cautious about browser add-ons. Cat Gatekeeper is free to download, and it currently works only with Google Chrome on Windows PCs and Mac computers.
