Shigeru Ishiba, the former Defense Minister, is poised to become Japan’s next Prime Minister following an endorsement from the Liberal Democratic Party. Ishiba, like current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his predecessor Shinzo Abe, is a member of Nippon Kaigi, a far-right nationalist group that takes pride in its monarchist beliefs.
However, Ishiba stands out for his progressive views on same-sex relationships. He has openly advocated for the recognition of same-sex marriages, stating, “There are a considerable number of LGBT people in the world. If they are disadvantaged by the lack of recognition of same-sex marriage, we should consider ways to help them.”
Aside from his political aspirations, Ishiba is a self-proclaimed “gun otaku” who enjoys building model firearms as a hobby. His passion for otaku culture aligns him with like-minded individuals such as Ken Akamatsu, a well-known manga author of “Love Hina” and “Negima,” who secured a government seat in 2022. Akamatsu has been an ardent defender of Japan’s freedom of expression, further enriching the cultural and political landscape of the nation.
Both Ishiba and Akamatsu are members of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, sparking hope for progressive changes and increased support for freedom of expression in the country.
