Seiko Presage Classic HCC005J and HCC006J bring 1913 Laurel-inspired design to Japan
Seiko has opened preorders in Japan for two new Presage Classic Series watches inspired by the brand’s historic 1913 Laurel, Japan’s first wristwatch. The new models, the Seiko Presage HCC005J and HCC006J, blend vintage styling with handcrafted dial finishes, offering collectors two elegant interpretations of an early 20th-century design.
The Seiko Presage HCC005J is priced at ¥179,300 including tax, which is approximately $1,125. The HCC006J is listed at ¥209,000, or around $1,312. Both watches are scheduled to go on sale on September 5 through Seiko Global Brand Core Shops in Japan.
Although the two watches share the same basic design language, the difference in price comes down to materials and finishing. The HCC005J features a white enamel dial, while the HCC006J uses a hand-applied black urushi lacquer dial with Kaga Maki-e gold numerals. The HCC006J also receives a gold-tone case with a super-hard coating, while the HCC005J comes in a stainless steel case.
Neither model is being released as a limited edition, which should make them more accessible than many special Presage releases. However, availability is still somewhat restricted at launch. These watches are part of Seiko’s Global Brand Core Shop lineup, meaning physical sales are limited to select Japanese retailers. The official online store is also restricted to Japan, so international buyers may need to wait for a wider release.
The HCC005J is the more traditional of the two, featuring a bright white enamel dial with elegant Breguet-style numerals, a red 12 o’clock marker, and blue hands. The result is a clean, classic look that closely reflects the spirit of early wristwatch design.
The HCC006J takes a richer and more dramatic approach. Its black urushi lacquer dial is paired with gold details, giving it a warmer and more luxurious appearance. Because the lacquer is applied by hand, Seiko notes that each dial may show slight natural variation, adding individuality to every piece.
At first glance, the sub-dial at 6 o’clock may appear to be a small seconds display, similar to the layout used on the original Laurel. However, it is actually a 24-hour indicator. This is because the 6R5H automatic movement used in these models does not include a small-seconds configuration.
Both watches share the same core specifications. The case measures 39.6 mm in diameter, 12.4 mm thick, and 46.8 mm from lug to lug. They also feature dual-curved sapphire crystal, 20 mm lug width, cow leather straps, three-fold clasps, and exhibition casebacks.
Inside each model is Seiko’s automatic 6R5H caliber. The movement has 24 jewels and offers a generous 72-hour power reserve, making it practical for regular wear. Accuracy is rated at +25 to -15 seconds per day.
One detail worth noting is water resistance. Seiko lists both models as splash resistant rather than providing a standard depth rating. While this is not unusual for watches with artisanal dials, buyers at this price level may still want to keep that limitation in mind.
With their Laurel-inspired styling, handcrafted dials, and restrained vintage proportions, the Seiko Presage HCC005J and HCC006J are likely to appeal to fans of classic Japanese watchmaking. The enamel model offers a crisp and timeless look, while the urushi lacquer version delivers a more ornate and traditional Japanese aesthetic. Both watches continue the Presage line’s focus on craftsmanship, heritage, and accessible mechanical luxury.
