Seiko is set to grow its popular Selection S Series lineup with four new solar chronographs arriving in Japan on March 26, 2026. The new releases include the SBPY181 with a brown dial, the SBPY183 with a blue dial, the SBPY185 with a black dial, and the SBPY187, a stealthy all-black option designed to feel like the most premium pick of the group.
All four watches are built around the same core formula: a 42.2 mm stainless steel case paired with a 12.2 mm thickness and a 48.3 mm lug-to-lug span. That sizing keeps the watches modern and sporty without drifting into oversized territory, making them a strong fit for everyday wear, whether you’re in business casual or weekend gear. Seiko is positioning this release as a technical update to the S Series catalog, aiming for a more “entry-to-mid-range” feel thanks to upgraded materials and finishing choices.
Powering the collection is Seiko’s V175 solar-quartz movement, a practical caliber known for grab-and-go reliability. Seiko rates accuracy at ±15 seconds per month, and once fully charged, the watch can run for about six months without needing additional light exposure. Functionally, you get a 60-minute chronograph that measures in 1/5-second increments, a 24-hour sub-dial, and a date window placed at 4:30 for a sportier layout.
One of the biggest quality-of-life upgrades here is the switch to sapphire crystal with Seiko’s “super clear” anti-reflective coating. That coating is often associated with higher-priced Seiko lines because it improves legibility by reducing glare, especially in bright daylight or harsh indoor lighting. For buyers comparing crystals, this is a meaningful step up from more basic options, and it helps these new Selection S chronographs feel more premium in day-to-day use.
The SBPY187 stands out as the top-tier variant thanks to its full black hard coating on both the case and bracelet. Beyond the darker, more tactical look, the hard coating is intended to increase surface scratch resistance, which is exactly what you want on a watch designed for frequent wear.
Across the entire lineup, Seiko includes practical durability features like 10-bar water resistance, JIS Type 1 antimagnetic protection, and LumiBrite on the hands and markers for visibility in low light. While the watches are mechanically similar to earlier related models, Seiko is introducing fresh dial textures and a renewed push for the 2026 season.
Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but the official on-sale date is set for March 26, 2026. For anyone searching for a Seiko solar chronograph with sapphire crystal, strong water resistance, and everyday-friendly sizing, these new Selection S Series references are worth keeping on the radar.
