Samsung Foundry, despite some challenges with its cutting-edge SF2 node, is seeing renewed interest in its older processes. Recently, the foundry received a major order from Tesla, which marks one of its largest deals yet.
Reports indicate that Samsung Electronics has signed a $16.5 billion agreement with Tesla. Elon Musk confirmed that the new fab in Texas will focus on producing Tesla’s next-generation AI6 chip. This partnership likely involves one of Samsung’s older nodes, possibly a 5 nm or 4 nm process, as these have a favorable 75% yield, suitable for high-volume production.
However, some sources hint that the SF2A node, Samsung’s 2nm technology tailored for automotive applications, might be in play. Although this might seem premature, given that the contract extends until 2033, there is ample time for Samsung to enhance its processes. Currently, there isn’t detailed information on the SF2A node’s yields, but it’s suggested that Samsung will optimize its production methods over time to meet Tesla’s needs.
Elon Musk has expressed his commitment to ensuring progress is swift, as he plans to personally oversee the efforts. This collaboration between Samsung and Tesla could mark a significant advancement in automotive technology and chip manufacturing.
