Samsung’s rumored 3D curved display could set up a major Galaxy S vs iPhone 20 showdown
Apple’s 20th-anniversary iPhone is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about smartphone launches of the decade. Expected to arrive in 2027, the iPhone 20 is rumored to introduce a dramatic quad-curved display, giving the device a futuristic edge-to-edge look unlike anything currently available on mainstream flagship phones.
But Apple may not be the only brand preparing a next-generation curved screen. A new rumor claims Samsung has also been working on an advanced curved OLED design, potentially giving a future Galaxy S flagship the hardware needed to compete directly with Apple’s anniversary iPhone.
According to the rumor, Samsung has been developing what is described as a “3D curved display” since 2025. While the term has not been officially explained, it likely refers to an OLED panel with curvature across multiple sides, possibly three curved edges with one flatter side. That would make it different from Apple’s expected quad-curved design, while still delivering a more immersive and premium appearance than current smartphone displays.
This could be an important move for Samsung. The company has a long history with curved screens, especially through its Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lineups. Although recent Galaxy Ultra models have moved toward flatter panels for better durability, usability, and S Pen support, Samsung never fully abandoned curved display technology. Instead, it may have shifted focus toward a more refined and futuristic version.
The timing is also interesting. If Apple launches the iPhone 20 with a quad-curved OLED screen in 2027, Samsung may wait until early 2028 to introduce its own version in a Galaxy S flagship. That makes the Galaxy S28 Ultra a possible candidate, especially since Samsung typically reserves its most advanced display and camera technologies for the Ultra model.
There is also speculation that Samsung’s relationship with Apple could influence the design. Samsung is expected to play a key role in supplying advanced displays for Apple’s future iPhone models. If Samsung is involved in producing Apple’s quad-curved panels, it may need to avoid releasing a design that looks too similar too soon. A 3D curved screen could allow Samsung to offer a premium curved-display experience while keeping enough visual difference between the two devices.
Software could also become part of the competition. Apple is rumored to be preparing a more glass-like interface style that could pair especially well with a curved display, creating deeper reflections, refraction effects, and a more fluid visual experience. If Samsung moves forward with its own 3D curved panel, future versions of One UI may also be adapted to take advantage of the hardware, though there is no confirmed information on that yet.
Chinese smartphone brands are also expected to chase similar display innovations. Quad-curved and multi-curved panels could become a major design trend among premium Android phones over the next few years, especially as brands look for new ways to make flagship devices feel fresh again.
For now, the Samsung 3D curved display remains a rumor. There is no official confirmation from Samsung, and plans can change before a device reaches mass production. Still, the idea is believable given Samsung’s display expertise and its history of pushing OLED technology forward.
If the rumor proves accurate, Samsung may not only use this display in its own Galaxy S series but also supply similar advanced panels to other smartphone makers. That would make Samsung a central player in the next major evolution of flagship phone design.
The biggest question is whether Samsung will bring back curved displays in a way that feels genuinely useful, not just visually impressive. If the company can combine a sleek 3D curved OLED panel with strong durability, improved touch rejection, better software effects, and premium ergonomics, the Galaxy S28 Ultra could become one of the most exciting Android flagships of 2028.
