Samsung is reportedly taking steps to revamp its 6th-generation 1c DRAM, a move aimed at improving yield rates and securing its position in the competitive memory market with its upcoming HBM4 technology. This strategic redesign is crucial for Samsung as it seeks to enhance the success of its high-bandwidth memory line, a key player in the company’s memory business ambitions.
The redesign of Samsung’s 1c DRAM process is seen as vital for the company’s future. According to industry reports, the initial design of this cutting-edge DRAM did not meet the expected yield rates, which hovered around the 60% to 70% mark. This shortfall in yield prevented Samsung from advancing to mass production and marked a significant hurdle. The major flaw seemed to be the chip’s size; by initially reducing the size to increase production capacity, Samsung inadvertently sacrificed process stability, resulting in these lower yield rates.
In a bid to rectify this, Samsung Electronics has revised the 1c DRAM design, opting to increase the chip size. This strategy aims at improving the yields, with Samsung targeting mid-year for stabilized mass production, even if this requires higher costs. The focus is firmly on achieving stable mass production of next-generation memory, a crucial aspect if Samsung wants to maintain a competitive edge.
