Samsung has announced the addition of three pioneering microSD cards to its lineup, encompassing breakthrough performance capabilities and substantial storage options. This move by Samsung aims to cater to a variety of storage requirements and user scenarios.
First-of-its-Kind SD Express microSD Card from Samsung
At the forefront of the launch is the introduction of the world’s inaugural microSD card leveraging the SD Express interface, pushing the boundaries of data transfer rates. This 256GB microSD card astonishes with sequential read speeds reaching up to 800MB/s. Samsung has integrated a low-power architecture and polished firmware to enhance performance and regulate heat more efficiently. It incorporates Dynamic Thermal Guard (DTG) technology, which ensures the card operates within ideal temperature ranges during intensive use.
Comparison with traditional microSD cards that employ the UHS-I interface peaking at 104MB/s or UHS-II interface capped at 150MB/s, Samsung’s cutting-edge card showcases up to 800MB/s. This speed is approximately 1.4x faster than conventional SATA SSDs, which max out at 560MB/s and is comparable to Samsung’s own lineup of portable external SSDs. Details regarding the availability and pricing of the 256GB SD Express microSD card will be announced later in the year.
Samsung’s 1TB UHS-I microSD Card Boasts Advanced V-NAND Technology
In another significant development, Samsung has introduced a 1TB microSD card that utilizes eight layers of the company’s latest eighth-generation 1TB V-NAND chips. This marks the debut use of such advanced technology in the memory card space. Withstanding rigorous testing, this microSD card guarantees consistent performance across various tough conditions.
The card is designed to be resilient against common hazards, such as drops, extreme temperatures, magnetic fields, water exposure, wear and tear, and X-rays. This resilient 1TB UHS-I microSD card is expected to hit the market in the first half of 2024.
An executive from Samsung Electronics comments on the release, indicating that these two new microSD cards are specifically developed to meet the surging demands of mobile computing and on-device AI applications. Despite their compact form, they’re designed to offer performance and capacity that rival solid-state drives, enhancing the user experience for high-demand applications in the present and future.
