Samsung Galaxy Watch’s New Sleep Apnea Detection Feature Receives FDA Approval

Samsung has made a leap forward in health monitoring technology with its latest Galaxy Watch feature designed to detect sleep apnea. The innovative tool has now received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), marking a significant milestone in the effort to incorporate advanced health tracking capabilities into wearable technology.

The FDA has granted De Novo authorization for Samsung’s sleep apnea feature, indicating the regulatory body’s confidence in the tool’s safety and efficacy for its intended purpose. This type of authorization is often used when introducing new types of medical devices to the market that have no prior equivalents.

The sleep apnea detection functionality, which has already been approved in South Korea, is intended for users aged 22 and over. It is particularly focused on identifying moderate to severe instances of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition that is frequently overlooked, despite its potential to disrupt sleep and contribute to various cardiovascular health issues.

The Galaxy Watch’s feature operates by monitoring the wearer over the course of two separate sleeping sessions, each lasting at least four hours within a ten-day timeframe, to provide accurate results. If signs of sleep apnea are detected, the Samsung Health Monitor app, available on both iOS and Android devices, will prompt the user with a notification and suggest seeking professional healthcare advice for further evaluation and management.

Samsung plans to roll out this sleep apnea detection tool in the US during the third quarter of the year via the Samsung Health Monitor app. Future updates regarding availability in other regions, such as Europe, have yet to be announced.

The approval of this feature is a step forward in preventive health care, as it provides a non-invasive way to alert users of potential sleep health issues, empowering them to take proactive steps towards their wellbeing.
