In a fascinating development showcasing just how versatile modern smartwatches have become, an innovative Reddit user, ZenonDesingk, has managed to breathe new life into an old-school gaming experience. By harnessing the power of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5, they’ve successfully played PSP games on this wearable device.
The Galaxy Watch 5, despite being powered by the Exynos W920—which is not the most advanced smartwatch processor—proved its mettle beyond just regular tasks. Initially, ZenonDesingk attempted to sideload a PSP emulator directly onto the watch, but the endeavor hit a snag. Undeterred, they turned to Bugjaeger, a tool designed for debugging Android devices. With this application, they succeeded in getting the emulator up and running on the smartwatch.
Once set up, the watch impressively handled various games at a steady 60 frames per second (FPS). While more graphically intense games like “God of War: Chains of Olympus” occasionally dipped to 30 FPS, the performance was still well within playable limits. Given the tiny screen of the Galaxy Watch 5, a wireless controller (such as the 8Bitdo Ultimate 2C) becomes an essential accessory, as using on-screen controls is impractical on such a device.
Although ZenonDesingk acknowledged that the smartwatch wasn’t designed for gaming, and eventually restored the device to its intended purpose of being a regular wearable, the experiment underscores the impressive capabilities of what’s usually considered a simple smartwatch. This modification isn’t just a testament to the potential of smartwatches—it also piques the curiosity of tech enthusiasts around what other innovations the future may hold.
