Tim Cook is on a mission to outpace Meta in the race to unveil Apple’s own smart glasses. These anticipated wearables, codenamed N50, are rapidly taking shape with a focus on integrating advanced AI features. Although the project could be costly, Apple’s aim is to compete directly with Meta’s Ray-Bans.
According to analyst Mark Gurman, Apple’s smart glasses are still in the developmental phase, far from being market-ready. The company envisions these augmented reality glasses functioning similarly to its Vision Pro glasses. If priced strategically, they could potentially be as transformative as the iPhone.
In the meantime, Apple wants to carve its niche in the smart glasses market by emphasizing Apple Intelligence, offering a unique twist to the competition against Meta. The device aims to combine sleek design with features like microphones, AI capabilities, speakers, and cameras, drawing inspiration from the minimalistic appeal of Meta’s Ray-Bans.
While these smart glasses aren’t ready for consumers yet, the objective is clear: transform eyewear into a powerhouse of Apple Intelligence. While the device will capture and process environmental data, it won’t fully delve into augmented reality just yet.
Privacy concerns are at the forefront, especially concerning the inclusion of cameras, and Apple is still considering how to navigate this sensitive territory. Both Apple and Meta may be looking at a potential 2027 launch, although supply challenges could impact timelines.
The intriguing question remains: will Apple manage to price these smart glasses below $1,000, despite their advanced technology and capabilities?
