Apple is gearing up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iPhone with a groundbreaking design that’s set to revolutionize the smartphone industry. The upcoming iPhone will feature a completely bezel-less design, a concept long desired by users and teased by futuristic concept art over the years.
According to a recent report, Apple is planning to incorporate “four-edge bending” display technology in its 2027 iPhone models. This innovative approach will see the display curving not just from the sides, but also from the top and bottom, creating a seamless, edge-to-edge screen. This design is expected to offer a truly immersive experience, unlike anything currently available on Android flagships.
Adding to the futuristic feel, the anniversary iPhone will reportedly be constructed using “mostly glass,” eliminating any cutouts in the display. Apple plans to integrate sensors and cameras under the screen, doing away with the current Dynamic Island feature. This aligns with earlier insights suggesting that at least one iPhone model in 2027 will boast such a boundary-pushing design, likely to be a ‘Pro’ model.
This design overhaul marks a significant step forward from the iPhone X introduced in 2017, which was already a design milestone. Since then, Apple maintained a similar design language, with the introduction of the Dynamic Island being a notable change. To facilitate the new design, Apple will employ a new OLED display driver IC using a 16nm FinFET process, a notable leap from the current 28nm technology. This change is expected to enhance power efficiency and preserve battery life, even as devices become slimmer, especially with the anticipated iPhone 17 Air.
The new technology will likely be supplied by industry leaders Samsung and LG. As we look forward to more updates on Apple’s 20th anniversary iPhone, it’s clear that the legacy of innovation continues to pave the way for the next era of smartphone technology. Keep an eye out for more exciting developments as the launch date approaches.
