Revolutionary 5D Memory Crystal Paves the Way for Indestructible Genomic Data Storage

Researchers at the University of Southampton have reached an astounding milestone by using a laser to etch the entire human genome onto a 5D memory crystal. This innovative data storage medium, made from silica glass, boasts an incredible capacity of 360 terabytes and is recognized by the Guinness World Records for its unparalleled durability.

This impressive 5D crystal, developed by the Optoelectronics Research Centre at the University of Southampton, is not just any storage device. It can endure a wide array of harsh conditions, including exposure to cosmic rays, immense pressure, and temperatures soaring up to 1832 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 1000 degrees Celsius).

To demonstrate this crystal’s extraordinary capabilities, the researchers encoded the entire human genome into it. They precisely sequenced each of the roughly 3 billion DNA base pairs 150 times to ensure accuracy. This incredible feat of data storage is now securely placed in the Memory of Mankind archive, a time capsule housed in a salt cave in Hallstatt, Austria.

While the technology might not yet enable us to clone humans or recreate species from genetic information alone, the researchers believe this 5D memory crystal could be instrumental in preserving endangered species and maintaining a permanent digital record of biological data.

Peter Kazansky, the professor leading this groundbreaking research, highlighted the potential of this technology, stating, “The 5D memory crystal opens up possibilities for other researchers to build an everlasting repository of genomic information from which complex organisms like plants and animals might be restored should science in the future allow.”

The crystal achieves its remarkable storage capabilities by combining two optical dimensions with three spatial dimensions. This innovative approach allows it to hold vast amounts of information and remain intact for billions of years, far outlasting traditional data storage methods.
