PayPal Reintroduces Feature for Collective Payments

PayPal is shaking things up with the reintroduction of a feature that promises to redefine how you pool money with friends and family. Just in time for the holiday season, PayPal is rolling out an exciting new way to collectively gather funds in the U.S., Germany, the U.K., Italy, and Spain. This revamped feature is perfect for those looking to simplify group payments for things like trips, gifts, or any shared expenses.

While it might seem like a new innovation, PayPal actually introduced a similar feature called “Money Pools” back in 2017. Despite its promising start, it was discontinued in November 2021. At that time, the service required all contributors to have a PayPal account, a limitation amidst emerging competitors offering more flexible options. The company’s heightened focus on charitable donations and the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic may have also influenced its decision to pause the service.

Now, with the resurgence of this feature, PayPal is aiming to make collective spending more user-friendly than ever. The process is straightforward — users can kick off a pool directly from either the PayPal app or the website. By selecting the “Pool Money” option, users can set up a title, description, target date, and optional goal amount. Crucially, contributions can be made by friends and family even if they don’t have a PayPal account, breaking down previous barriers. Pool creators receive a sharable link for easy contribution requests, which can be sent out via text, email, WhatsApp, or Messenger.

Tracking contributions is a breeze, and once funds are collected, the organizer can transfer them to their account to spend on the desired purchase — be it a vacation, gift, or group dinner.

John Anderson, PayPal’s General Manager and Senior Vice President of Consumer, expressed enthusiasm about the relaunch. He highlighted the importance of staying connected through finances and how PayPal aims to ease both social and financial group interactions with this new feature.

This reinvigorated tool is not just another expense-splitting function, like those offered by apps such as Venmo or Splitwise. It’s designed for situations where funds are needed upfront before making a purchase, unlike traditional methods that typically settle expenses post-purchase.

With these updates, PayPal is addressing the evolving needs of its users, making collective financing seamless and stress-free, just as we head into a season filled with opportunities for connection and shared experiences.
