Intel Panther Lake Delivers Near-Lunar Lake Efficiency With a Big Performance Jump
Intel’s Panther Lake processors, also known as the Core Ultra 300 series, arrived with a bold promise: deliver the impressive battery efficiency of Lunar Lake while pushing performance much higher. After real-world testing in premium business laptops, that claim appears to hold up surprisingly well.
The HP EliteBook X G2i is one of the clearest examples so far. This 14-inch business laptop is powered by the Intel Core Ultra 7 356H, a 16-core Panther Lake chip, paired with a WUXGA IPS display at 1,920 x 1,200 resolution and a 68 Wh battery. That makes it a strong comparison point against the previous HP EliteBook X G1i, which used the older Intel Core Ultra 7 268V Lunar Lake processor, an 8-core chip, while offering a similar display and the same battery capacity.
In everyday efficiency, the older Lunar Lake-based EliteBook still has a slight advantage when the system is idling. However, when it comes to practical battery life, the difference is minimal. In a Wi-Fi web browsing test at 150 cd/m² brightness, the EliteBook X G1i lasted around 18.5 hours, while the newer Panther Lake-powered EliteBook X G2i reached nearly 18 hours.
That is an impressive result because the newer laptop does not simply match the older model’s endurance; it also delivers substantially stronger performance. The EliteBook X G2i is around 32 percent faster than its predecessor, making the small battery life difference easier to accept.
This is exactly where Intel Panther Lake becomes interesting. For users who want a laptop that lasts through a full workday and still has enough power for heavier productivity tasks, the Core Ultra 300 series looks like a meaningful upgrade. It brings a noticeable jump in CPU performance without sacrificing the long battery life that made Lunar Lake appealing.
The key takeaway is simple: Intel appears to have delivered on its Panther Lake promise. The Core Ultra 300 platform offers nearly the same efficiency as Lunar Lake while providing much better performance, especially in modern business laptops like the HP EliteBook X G2i. For professionals, students, and frequent travelers, that combination could make Panther Lake laptops some of the most balanced Windows notebooks of this generation.
