MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro Geekbench Results Raise Questions Despite Strong A20 Pro Challenge
MediaTek has officially introduced the Dimensity 9600 Pro, its most powerful mobile chipset so far and one of the first 2nm platforms expected to appear in next-generation Android flagship smartphones. As expected, the launch came with performance claims designed to show how far the company has pushed its latest silicon, especially in Geekbench 6 single-core and multi-core testing.
On paper, the Dimensity 9600 Pro looks extremely competitive. MediaTek claims the new chip delivers a 17 percent improvement in single-core performance and a 15 percent gain in multi-core performance compared with the Dimensity 9500. The company also positioned the chipset directly against Apple’s A20 Pro, which remains a major benchmark target in the premium smartphone processor market.
According to the figures shown during the announcement, the Dimensity 9600 Pro scored 4,276 points in Geekbench 6 single-core and 12,650 points in multi-core. Apple’s A20 Pro, meanwhile, scored 4,725 points in single-core and 12,575 points in multi-core.
That means Apple still leads clearly in single-core performance, an area where its custom CPU designs have traditionally dominated. However, MediaTek’s new flagship chip appears to edge ahead in multi-core performance, though only by a narrow margin.
The more interesting part of the comparison comes from the Dimensity 9500 numbers. MediaTek’s latest slide lists the older chipset with a Geekbench 6 single-core score of 3,666 and a multi-core score of 11,014. The issue is that previous Geekbench 6.4 results shared for the Dimensity 9500 showed a higher single-core score of 4,007.
That difference matters. If the earlier score was accurate, the Dimensity 9500’s single-core result appears to have been reduced by around 8.5 percent in the newer comparison. This makes the Dimensity 9600 Pro’s generational improvement look larger than it may actually be. While benchmark conditions can vary depending on software, cooling, firmware, and device configuration, using a lower score for the older chip naturally raises questions about how the comparison was prepared.
There is also the possibility that the Dimensity 9600 Pro results were achieved under ideal testing conditions. Short benchmark runs such as Geekbench 6 can benefit heavily from excellent cooling, controlled temperatures, and pre-production tuning. If the chip was tested in a carefully managed environment, its scores could be higher than what users may see in retail smartphones.
That does not mean the Dimensity 9600 Pro is not impressive. A 2nm flagship chipset reaching this level of performance is a major step forward for Android devices, especially if manufacturers pair it with strong thermal designs and optimized software. Its multi-core showing against Apple’s A20 Pro suggests that MediaTek is continuing to close the gap at the top end of the mobile processor market.
Still, real-world performance will be the true test. Sustained gaming, app loading, AI workloads, battery efficiency, heat management, and retail-device benchmarks will matter more than launch-day slides. Until commercial smartphones powered by the Dimensity 9600 Pro become available, these early Geekbench numbers should be viewed with cautious optimism.
For now, MediaTek’s latest flagship chip looks fast, ambitious, and ready to compete with the best mobile processors. But the score differences involving the Dimensity 9500 show why benchmark comparisons deserve a closer look before drawing final conclusions.
