The battle for supremacy in the AI industry is heating up as companies race to introduce groundbreaking technologies and herald the next big innovation. While OpenAI has already carved out a significant presence with its extensive range of offerings, a formidable contender, DeepSeek, is garnering attention for its wallet-friendly model. This startup from China has not only captured interest but also leaped ahead of ChatGPT in the Apple App Store rankings. Although OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, acknowledges the buzz surrounding DeepSeek’s r1 model and welcomes the competitive spirit, he also reminds audiences of the exciting innovations OpenAI has up its sleeve. Keeping that promise, OpenAI unveils its latest creation, a cutting-edge AI tool called Deep Research.
Despite DeepSeek’s rising popularity, OpenAI continues to push the envelope with Deep Research, a tool designed for tackling intricate tasks. OpenAI initially disrupted the AI landscape with ChatGPT and has been on an upward trajectory ever since, aspiring to achieve the landmark goal of artificial general intelligence (AGI). However, with DeepSeek gaining traction in the U.S., OpenAI is determined to elevate its game.
Deep Research emerges as OpenAI’s new powerhouse, capable of addressing complex tasks that demand deep reasoning and in-depth research. Sam Altman emphasized how this innovative model distinguishes itself by undertaking a broad spectrum of challenging and worthwhile tasks, albeit requiring significant computing power and operating at a deliberate pace. He explained the model’s capabilities, stating it’s highly compute-intensive and slow, but it’s the first AI system capable of executing such a variety of complex and valuable tasks. Initially available in the pro tier with 100 queries per month, team and enterprise tiers will follow, eventually reaching the free tier.
This latest AI tool is built to autonomously manage tasks based on user-provided data. With Deep Research, OpenAI is advancing towards more independent AI agents that can seek out and assess information across diverse formats like text and images while adjusting outputs as more data becomes available. This approach aligns with OpenAI’s broader vision of AI super agents proficient in decision-making and elevated reasoning. The model meticulously processes resources, taking between 5 to 30 minutes to fulfill a task, with users being notified upon completion.
Previously, OpenAI introduced an ‘Operator’ agent to assist with web-based tasks such as grocery shopping and flight bookings, followed by ChatGPT Gov tailored for U.S. government agencies. Now, with the release of Deep Research, OpenAI continues to steadfastly solidify its stance in the AI realm while enhancing user experience through the development of autonomous AI capabilities.
