OnePlus 16 Rumors Point to a Major Telephoto Camera Boost

The OnePlus 15 delivered a big leap in speed and endurance, thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and a larger battery. But that progress came with a trade-off: the camera hardware was scaled back compared to the previous generation, including smaller primary and telephoto sensors, along with the absence of Hasselblad color tuning. Now, a fresh leak suggests OnePlus is preparing to swing back hard in the camera department with its 2026 flagship, widely expected to be called the OnePlus 16.

According to the latest rumor, the OnePlus 16 is set to receive a major telephoto camera upgrade—potentially one of the most significant changes in the lineup in recent years. Earlier buzz pointed to a 200MP sensor coming to the OnePlus 16, but it wasn’t clear if that ultra-high-resolution sensor would be used for the main camera or the zoom lens. The newest information indicates it’s aimed specifically at the telephoto camera.

The leak claims OnePlus will use a 200MP 1/1.56-inch sensor for the telephoto camera on the OnePlus 16. That would be a substantial jump from the OnePlus 15’s telephoto setup, which is said to use a smaller 50MP 1/2.76-inch sensor. In practical terms, a larger, higher-resolution telephoto sensor can deliver sharper zoom shots, improved detail at longer distances, and better low-light performance compared to smaller telephoto sensors—exactly the areas where flagship buyers tend to be most critical.

There’s also talk of a telephoto macro feature, similar to what’s been seen on recent Oppo flagship models. If accurate, this could let the OnePlus 16 use its zoom lens not just for distant subjects, but also for detailed close-up photography—think textures, food shots, and small objects—while maintaining more comfortable shooting distance than typical ultra-wide macro modes.

Camera upgrades may not be the only headline feature. The OnePlus 16 is rumored to pack a massive 9,000mAh battery, up from an already-large 7,300mAh cell in the OnePlus 15. If this number holds, it could put the OnePlus 16 among the endurance leaders in the premium smartphone category, appealing to heavy users who prioritize all-day (and potentially multi-day) battery life.

On the display side, the refresh rate is rumored to go beyond 200Hz. That’s far above the 120Hz standard most flagship phones offer today, and it could be aimed at ultra-smooth gaming and scrolling—assuming the rest of the display and software stack is tuned to take meaningful advantage of it.

Performance should stay firmly in flagship territory as well. The OnePlus 16 is expected to use Qualcomm’s next-generation top-tier Snapdragon processor. Current chatter suggests Qualcomm may introduce two versions: a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. Which one ends up inside the OnePlus 16 isn’t clear yet, but either way, it’s expected to be positioned as OnePlus’ premier performance phone for 2026.

If these leaks are accurate, the OnePlus 16 could be shaping up as a major course correction: a phone that keeps the performance gains from the OnePlus 15, while addressing one of its biggest compromises by taking telephoto photography much more seriously.
