OnePlus 16 could finally make 165Hz feel like a real flagship feature
The OnePlus 16 is shaping up to deliver one of the biggest display upgrades in the brand’s recent history. OnePlus China president Li Jie has confirmed that the upcoming phone will support a global 165Hz ultra-high refresh rate across the system, rather than limiting the feature to only a handful of selected games.
That matters because the OnePlus 15 also had a 165Hz display, but most users rarely experienced that speed in everyday use. Outside of certain supported titles, the phone usually stayed capped at 120Hz. For a device marketed with a high-refresh-rate panel, that left many users feeling like the hardware’s full potential was locked away.
With the OnePlus 16, OnePlus appears ready to fix that. Li Jie says the phone will offer system-wide 165Hz support and will be the first handset to launch with ColorOS 17 out of the box. If implemented well, this could make scrolling, animations, app switching, and gaming feel noticeably smoother throughout the entire phone experience.
A well-known Chinese tipster has also claimed that the OnePlus 16 uses a new Oriental Screen X4 display material along with revised circuitry. This setup is said to provide hardware-level support for the 165Hz refresh rate, meaning the feature may be built more deeply into the phone rather than added as a limited software trick. OnePlus has not officially confirmed those specific display hardware details yet.
Another important change could be how users access the 165Hz mode. On the OnePlus 15, the higher refresh rate option was placed inside Developer Options, making it harder for regular users to find. Even when enabled, it forced the display to remain at 165Hz instead of intelligently lowering the refresh rate when showing static content. That approach could hurt battery life and did not feel like a true adaptive system-wide mode.
For the OnePlus 16, the 165Hz toggle is expected to appear directly in the normal display settings menu. That would make it much easier to use and suggests OnePlus may be treating the feature as a core part of the phone, not an experimental option.
Reports also suggest that the 165Hz refresh rate has been tested in system apps and apps installed from the Play Store. If accurate, this would be a major improvement over the OnePlus 15, which only gained limited 165Hz support for apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and X through a later update.
Beyond the display, early leaks point to a powerful flagship package. The OnePlus 16 is rumored to feature a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset, a massive 9,000mAh battery, and a 200MP main camera. If those specifications prove accurate, the device could be one of OnePlus’ most ambitious phones yet, combining extreme performance, long battery life, and a smoother visual experience.
However, there are still several unanswered questions. OnePlus has not confirmed the official launch date for the OnePlus 16. Current rumors suggest the phone could debut in China in October, but global availability remains uncertain.
That uncertainty is especially important because OnePlus recently pulled back from several major international markets, including North America and Europe, while continuing support and software service for existing customers in those regions. Because of that, it is not yet clear whether the OnePlus 16 will receive a wider release outside China.
For now, the biggest confirmed upgrade is the system-wide 165Hz display support. If OnePlus delivers it properly, the OnePlus 16 could solve one of the most frustrating issues from the OnePlus 15 and give users a smoother, more premium flagship experience from the moment they unlock the phone.
