OnePlus 15R Teardown Reveals a Surprisingly Repair-Friendly Build

A new teardown of the OnePlus 15R delivers a bit of rare good news for anyone who keeps their phone for years: replacing the battery looks noticeably easier than what you’ll find on many modern smartphones. Battery swaps have become one of the most frustrating repairs thanks to aggressive glue and the risk of puncturing the cell during removal. On the OnePlus 15R, a simple but smart solution helps reduce that stress—a built-in pull pouch designed to lift the battery out without the kind of sharp prying tools that can turn a routine repair into a dangerous one.

In the teardown, the battery itself isn’t completely “open and go.” The battery cables are tucked beneath layers of graphite film and copper tape, which means you still have to work carefully to expose and disconnect everything properly. Even so, the actual moment of removing the battery is far more straightforward than dealing with a fully glued-in pack. For repairability, that pull pouch is a meaningful quality-of-life improvement, especially for people who plan to replace the battery after a couple of years rather than buying a whole new phone.

That said, the OnePlus 15R doesn’t abandon modern design compromises. The glass backplate still relies on adhesives instead of screws or clips, so getting inside the device requires heat. Users typically need a hairdryer or heat gun to soften the adhesive before lifting the back panel, and that step comes with risks on both ends: too little heat and the glass can crack while you’re trying to separate it; too much heat and you could potentially damage internal components. It’s the kind of opening process that rewards patience and a steady hand, and it’s not as beginner-friendly as a design that uses fasteners.

Once inside, there’s also a bit of delicate handling required. Repairers have to peel back the graphite film and copper tape carefully to reach the battery connections. Those materials help with thermal management and shielding, but they add extra steps and can be easy to tear if rushed.

Where the OnePlus 15R really pushes back against DIY friendliness is the screen replacement process. According to the teardown, replacing the display is the most time-consuming repair because the screen isn’t easily accessible from the start. To reach the screen flex cable, you have to remove the back plate, take out screws, remove the bottom cover, and then pull the subboard before the cable is finally exposed. After that, the display still needs to be heated and pried off, and a replacement requires fresh adhesive to secure the new panel in place.

Overall, the OnePlus 15R lands in an interesting middle ground for smartphone repair. It doesn’t fully commit to an easy-open design, and display repairs still look like a major job. But for many users, battery replacement is the repair they care about most—and the pull pouch approach makes the OnePlus 15R stand out in a market where battery swaps are often unnecessarily difficult.
