NVIDIA Unveils Game-Changing “Smooth Motion” Frame Generation for RTX 40 Series, Doubling FPS in New Driver Release

NVIDIA has launched its “Smooth Motion” technology with the RTX 40 series GPUs, offering gamers a transformed experience with a significant boost in frame rates.

This innovative feature works similarly to AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames, generating an extra frame between rendered ones to effectively double the frame rate in games. Impressively, this enhancement operates at the software level, meaning it doesn’t require game-specific integration and functions with titles that lack DLSS Frame Generation.

The latest NVIDIA 590.26 preview drivers now support Smooth Motion with Ada Lovelace GPUs, expanding access to this technology for more gamers.

Although RTX 40 users can’t enable Smooth Motion through the usual NVIDIA App just yet, savvy users can activate it using the NVIDIA Profile Inspector tool as a temporary solution. Feedback from testers indicates that enabling Smooth Motion can double the frames per second in games like World of Warcraft, from 82 to 164 FPS. However, with the drivers still in the preview phase, some users report inconsistencies, so it might be wise to wait for the official release.

Smooth Motion is particularly beneficial for older applications that don’t support DLSS, and it’s effective in scenarios where CPU limitations or low frame-rate locks exist. While the FPS increase is impressive, it’s important to note that it doesn’t equate to a similar uptick in visual quality. This technology isn’t as sophisticated as DLSS integration and may sometimes result in minor artifacts. Nonetheless, for those looking to maximize FPS, Smooth Motion offers a compelling doubling effect.

For those eager to explore the preview driver, make sure you have an NVIDIA Developer account to download it.
