The US government has approved the sale of NVIDIA’s advanced AI chips to the UAE-based AI firm G42, reflecting a diplomatic shift in trade policy for allied nations.
The Biden administration appears eager to bolster its tech influence globally, especially by facilitating exports of NVIDIA’s AI chips to friendly countries. While cautious with adversarial nations, the US recognizes the keen interest from Middle Eastern countries like the UAE in enhancing their AI capabilities. As a result, NVIDIA is now set to sell its state-of-the-art Hopper H100 AI GPUs to G42, an ambitious move aimed at increasing market dominance for both entities.
The Middle East is rapidly emerging as a key player in the global AI market, much like China has been. Within this context, G42 is making significant strides by rapidly expanding data centers, relying heavily on hardware from Western suppliers to avoid any technology transfer to China. Notably, G42 has proactively phased out Chinese components from its operations to further distance itself from any potential security risks associated with Chinese technology.
Financially, G42 is gaining considerable momentum. Microsoft has invested $1.5 billion into the company, targeting infrastructure development and AI model training. Additionally, G42 has partnered with AI chip maker Cerebras to build massive data centers in the UAE. These efforts aim to establish some of the largest data centers globally, using US-supplied equipment to compete with China’s strong technological presence in the region.
The UAE isn’t alone in its pursuit of cutting-edge AI technology. Recently, Qatar’s telecom giant Ooredoo acquired a substantial number of NVIDIA’s AI GPUs for their GPU-as-a-Service offerings, enabling clients to leverage an advanced AI ecosystem for significant projects and generative AI applications. Furthermore, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, visited the Middle East not long ago to seek investments for his ambitious AI ventures, underscoring the region’s pivotal role in the global AI landscape.
By strengthening ties with technological allies like the UAE, the US bolsters its global tech influence while fostering advancements in the rapidly growing AI sector.
