Notch Teases the Future with a Hint at Minecraft 2

Markus “Notch” Persson, the original mastermind behind Minecraft, has set the gaming world abuzz with news of what could be considered a spiritual successor to his monumental creation. After conducting a poll on social media, Notch revealed his intention to embark on a new project akin to Minecraft, cheekily dubbing it “Minecraft 2″.

At the start of the new year, Notch reached out to his followers, seeking their candid thoughts on whether he should pursue his current retro-themed project or pivot towards something new, reminiscent of Minecraft. The results were clear – nearly 79% of respondents urged him to focus on crafting a game in the spirit of Minecraft rather than sticking with the retro project.

For years, Notch has been immersed in developing a game that intertwines roguelike elements with the essence of classic first-person dungeon crawlers like Wizardry. However, the enthusiastic response from fans has swayed him to consider shifting his creative gears.

Notch openly shared his thoughts by saying, “I found myself considering that while many appreciate my work, not everyone shares my taste for retro nostalgia. There may be those who wish for me to develop a spiritual successor to Minecraft instead.” He humorously added, “And of course, the financial incentive doesn’t hurt.”

Acknowledging his audience’s desires, Notch announced he is ready to embark on this new journey, though it won’t mimic Minecraft to sidestep any infringement issues with Mojang and Microsoft, the latter of which acquired Minecraft for over $2 billion.

Still, Notch finds himself stepping into a potentially sensitive area. The gaming industry is notorious for spiritual successors not living up to their predecessors, often seen as “washed up” and “tragic.” Nonetheless, he seems determined to prove otherwise.

“I prize being a man of my word,” Notch emphasized. “My goal is to undertake this venture without encroaching upon the remarkable efforts of the Mojang team and the operations of Microsoft.”

The timing of this announcement sparks intrigue. Many speculate about the noncompete agreements tied to the monumental Microsoft buyout. Without such restrictions, Notch’s renewed interest in a Minecraft-like endeavor is undoubtedly tantalizing.

Though he’s expressed some disapproval of Microsoft’s approach to Minecraft, he remains respectful. “It’s their responsibility, and it appears they permit the studio to operate autonomously, which seems equitable to me,” Notch remarked.

Meanwhile, Mojang continues to enrich Minecraft with a slew of updates and new content, while Microsoft expands the brand further. Among their pursuits is a live-action Minecraft movie that is set to debut this spring, showcasing the enduring legacy and popularity of Notch’s original brainchild.
