As of May 2023, Nintendo has announced the sale of 125.62 million units of its popular Switch console family, which includes the standard Switch, the Switch OLED, and the Switch Lite, up to March of the same year. The gaming giant now anticipates that it will sell an additional 15.5 million units during the April 2023 to March 2024 fiscal year, surpassing the original estimate of 15 million. This suggests that total sales for the Switch could reach approximately 141.12 million units by the end of March 2024.
The record for the highest-selling console of all time is currently held by the Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2), which boasts a staggering 155 million units sold globally. Hot on its heels is the Nintendo DS, with global sales of 154 million units. If Nintendo’s projections hold true, the Switch could surpass both the Nintendo DS and the Sony PS2 by 2025, potentially claiming the title of the most successful gaming console ever.
While the future of the Nintendo Switch could be impacted by various factors, including the introduction of a successor potentially leading to the discontinuation of the current model, industry specialists are anticipating the launch of the so-called “Switch 2” later this year. Rumors suggest that the next iteration of Nintendo’s console might feature an 8-inch LCD and a more powerful Nvidia T239 chipset, albeit without dedicated hardware for DLSS support. Additionally, there is speculation that both the console and its game titles might come with higher price tags compared to their predecessors.
