Nexus Mods Rejects Blanket AI Ban, Gives Creators 60 Days to Label AI-Made Content

Nexus Mods Makes AI Disclosure Mandatory for All New Mod Uploads

Nexus Mods is tightening its rules around AI-generated content, but it is not banning AI-made mods. Instead, the popular modding platform is introducing mandatory AI disclosure for every new mod uploaded to the site, aiming to give players more transparency while still allowing creators to use modern tools.

The updated policy went into effect on November 3. From now on, mod authors must clearly state whether artificial intelligence was used in the creation of a mod. Creators with existing mods will have a 60-day grace period, ending January 2, 2027, to update their mod pages and comply with the new requirements.

The platform’s stance is direct: it supports “pro-human creativity,” but it also recognizes that AI is already part of many creative workflows. Rather than forcing AI use underground with a full ban, Nexus Mods wants AI involvement to be visible, labeled, and managed through clear rules.

Under the new policy, Nexus Mods will continue using its existing AI labels, including AI-generated, AI-assisted, and AI-generated promotional media. The major change is that these labels are no longer optional for new uploads. If a creator used AI at any stage of development, they must disclose it.

For mods marked as AI-assisted, authors must also explain how AI was used. This could include anything from script suggestions and texture generation to voice work, concept art, promotional images, or full asset creation. The goal is to help users understand the difference between a mod that was lightly assisted by AI tools and one that was largely generated by them.

These labels are also important for players who want control over what they download. Nexus Mods says it is improving its content preference and filtering tools so users can more easily hide or avoid AI-generated mods if they choose.

The decision comes after ongoing debate across the video game modding community. Modding has traditionally been driven by passion, skill, and long-term dedication, with some major projects taking years to complete. At the same time, AI tools have made it possible for some creators to produce content much faster, raising concerns about quality, originality, ethics, and proper credit.

Nexus Mods co-owner Victor “Foledinho” Folmann explained that the policy is designed to make AI usage clearer and easier to identify. While the site already had AI-related tags, the new rules make disclosure more consistent and visible across the platform.

He also explained why Nexus Mods is not introducing a complete ban on AI-generated mods. AI is now used in many different parts of the creative process, from coding assistance to textures, voices, and assets. Because of that, drawing a firm line between acceptable and unacceptable AI use can be difficult.

According to the platform’s reasoning, an outright ban would not remove AI from modding. Instead, it could encourage creators to hide their use of AI. Nexus Mods believes a disclosure-based approach is more practical, allowing AI use to remain public, clearly labeled, and subject to platform rules.

Enforcement will be part of the new system. Players will still be able to report mods that appear to use AI without proper disclosure, but moderation will not depend only on user reports. After the grace period ends, staff may contact authors whose mod pages are missing required AI information and ask them to update their listings.

If authors fail to comply, they may face moderation action. Possible consequences include warnings, account restrictions, or removal of the affected mod. Nexus Mods has made it clear that transparency is not optional under the new rules.

The platform is also making a strong promise to creators: it will not use hosted mods to train AI models, nor will it sell or license hosted content to others for AI training. This is likely to be an important reassurance for mod authors concerned about their work being reused without permission.

In addition, Nexus Mods is adding new permission options that allow creators to decide whether their mods can be used with AI tools or for AI training. These permissions will default to “Ask Me,” meaning others must request approval before using a creator’s work in that way.

With this policy, Nexus Mods is choosing regulation over prohibition. The platform is acknowledging the reality of AI in game modding while giving users and creators more control. For players, the change means clearer labels and better filtering. For mod authors, it means being upfront about their tools and methods.

As AI continues to reshape game development, digital art, voice creation, and modding, policies like this may become more common across gaming platforms. Nexus Mods is positioning itself as a space where AI content can exist, but only with transparency, disclosure, and respect for human creativity.
