The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Is Getting a New Expansion Called Songs of the Past
CD Projekt Red is bringing Geralt of Rivia back for another major adventure. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: Songs of the Past has been revealed as a paid third story expansion, and it is currently planned for release in 2027. Developed with co-developer Fool’s Theory, the expansion arrives more than a decade after Blood and Wine and promises a fresh open-world region, new quests, deadly monsters, and a major mystery tied to one of Geralt’s closest friends.
Songs of the Past will launch for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Battle.net. While an exact release date and price have not been announced, CD Projekt Red has suggested that the expansion will be comparable in scope to Blood and Wine, which remains one of the most beloved expansions in modern role-playing games.
A new region called Letten
The expansion takes players to Letten, a brand-new open-world area inspired by the countryside of England and Poland. Unlike the brutal, war-scarred landscapes that defined much of The Witcher 3, Letten is described as a more peaceful and picturesque region filled with rolling hills, calm lakes, rural villages, and noble estates.
That calm, however, will not last long.
CD Projekt Red is aiming to make Letten feel more alive than previous regions, with upgraded NPC behavior designed to give towns and villages a stronger sense of daily life. Players can expect a world where settlements feel busier, characters react more naturally, and the countryside hides secrets beneath its charming surface.
Dandelion’s past takes center stage
One of the biggest surprises in Songs of the Past is its focus on Dandelion, Geralt’s longtime friend, bard, and frequent source of trouble. The expansion explores Dandelion’s noble background, reminding players that his full name is Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove.
The story brings Geralt to the estate where Dandelion grew up after a death in the family draws attention to Letten. But things quickly become more complicated when Dandelion disappears. Geralt then joins forces with Dandelion’s cousin, Lilla, to uncover what happened and why the bard’s family history may be tied to something much darker.
This setup gives the expansion a more personal angle than a typical monster contract. Instead of simply chasing beasts for coin, Geralt is pulled into a mystery involving old family secrets, folklore, and a cursed place that locals fear.
The Garden of Thorns and the legend of the Naghag
The investigation eventually leads Geralt to the Garden of Thorns, a cursed location that stands in sharp contrast to Letten’s peaceful countryside. Inside this dangerous area, twisted trees, aggressive plant life, and unnatural forces replace the welcoming fields and villages outside.
The Garden of Thorns is connected to local legends surrounding a witch known as the Naghag. CD Projekt Red has teased that players will have multiple ways to deal with the garden’s gate. Geralt may be able to talk his way in, use his witcher senses, or force the entrance open. Each choice will reportedly come with consequences, suggesting that player decisions will once again shape the flow of the story.
This kind of choice-driven design is exactly what helped make The Witcher 3 such a standout RPG. If Songs of the Past follows that same philosophy, Letten could become another memorable region filled with morally complicated decisions and unexpected outcomes.
Geralt gets a new silver chain weapon
Songs of the Past also introduces a new tool for Geralt: a hooked silver chain wrapped around his forearm. This weapon is designed for ranged combat and crowd control, giving Geralt a new way to manage enemies before closing in for the kill.
The chain allows him to hook distant enemies and pull them into melee range, creating opportunities for quick sword attacks and faster follow-up combos. It should be especially useful when fighting enemies that try to keep their distance or hide behind defenses.
CD Projekt Red has also confirmed that new mutagens will be added in the expansion, though the full progression details have not yet been revealed. These additions could give players more build options and new ways to customize Geralt’s combat style.
New monsters are coming to The Witcher 3
A new Witcher adventure would not be complete without new monsters, and Songs of the Past is adding fresh threats to the Continent.
One of the new enemy types is the Thornbloom, a vicious plant creature that cannot move but attacks anything that comes too close. These dangerous flowers may be rooted in place, but they can lash out violently, turning seemingly harmless areas into deadly traps.
Another new enemy is the Swarmion, a humanoid creature protected by a living shield of hornets. These enemies appear to rely on their insect defenses to keep Geralt at bay, and the new silver chain may be the key to breaking through their protection.
The addition of plant-based monsters and insect-shielded humanoids fits perfectly with the cursed nature of the Garden of Thorns. It also gives the expansion a distinct identity compared to previous Witcher 3 regions.
Release window and platforms
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: Songs of the Past is scheduled to release in 2027. It will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Battle.net. CD Projekt Red has not yet announced the expansion’s exact launch date or price.
Before Songs of the Past arrives, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered is set to launch on September 29. The improvements from that remastered version will carry over into the new expansion, meaning players can expect the latest visual and technical upgrades to support Geralt’s journey through Letten.
The expansion also arrives ahead of The Witcher 4, which is currently targeted for 2028. That makes Songs of the Past an important bridge for fans who want one more adventure with Geralt before the series moves into its next major chapter.
With a new region to explore, a personal story centered on Dandelion, fresh monsters, expanded combat options, and a scope compared to Blood and Wine, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: Songs of the Past is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated RPG expansions of 2027. For longtime fans, it offers something many thought they would never see again: a brand-new journey with Geralt of Rivia.
